It is going to be particularly difficult to stomach or even imagine someone other than legendary actor Harrison Ford playing the much loved Han Solo character in the new Star Wars standalone movie “Han Solo’ which is to hit cinemas in May 2018.
However, as news is finally surfacing that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie) are to helm the new Star Wars spinoff, speculations are rife about who would play Han Solo.
“We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us,” said the elated directors in a statement.
It was previously revealed that the plot would revolve around a ‘young Han Solo’ (the focus being on young) and how he ended up being a smuggler, thief and a crook who ultimately came across Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the cantina at Mos Eisley.
Harrison Ford goes out of contention for this one until and unless some unbelievable CGI effects make him look fifty years younger. But Star Wars fans wouldn’t feel low as they would still see their favorite actor in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
Let’s take a look at some of the actors who could be good choices for the younger Han Solo:
He is thirty but he looks a year or two younger. He has starred in 21 Jump Street under the direction of the same duo which is making Han Solo. He has the promise to make it big and is untested with lead roles. He has a charismatic personality, something which one wants from Han Solo.
The problem for him would be to meet the demands of a lead actor. Star Wars fans won’t tolerate a sloppy performance and stepping into the shoes of a lead actor in a movie of such scale might be a challenge.
Now if the emphasis is really on the actor being young then a budding actor like Nick Robinson isn’t a bad choice (Kings of Summer and Jurassic World). At 20, he fits perfectly well with the young and fresh philosophy the directors are trying to instill in the new movie.. A far cry? Maybe, but this is probably the risk the casting team might be looking for the new Star Wars spinoff.
The problem with him is that he is probably a little too young to play Han Solo. But if he gets casted, by the time the filming starts he would be 21.
The 29 years old actor from Scotland has already acted in a Disney movie (Prince Kit in Cinderalla). He has a charming personality, coupled with a rugged look to be the Han Solo both the audience and the Star Wars franchise are looking for.
But he’ll have to leave his Scottish accent and style behind to garner attention and applause from Star Wars fans. Let’s go King in the North!
Chris Pratt here has experience on how to operate in intergalactic space thanks to his role as Peter Quill in Marvel’s “Guardians of Galaxy”. Plus he is already familiar with working in the company of Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The trio worked together in The Lego Movie). Finally, Steven Spielberg wants to direct an Indiana Jones reboot starring Chris Pratt. The hunk from Parks and Recreation must have something in him to have such a good CV.
If Nick Robinson is a bit young then Chris Pratt is a bit old and would look old too (36 years) to play the young Han Solo. Let’s leave this problem to the casting team of Han Solo and move on.
The 25 years old Anthony Ingruber is another choice; well actually quite a few see him as the only choice. He is relatively new to movies but fans have liked him instantly. The actor has already played as young Harrison Ford alongside Blake Lively in Age of Adaline. The guy is the next best thing to some miraculous CGI effects making Harrison Ford look 35 years younger.

The actor seems to be an excellent choice here because he would bring his own new style as he has had very little screen exposure and this would be refreshing for Star Wars fans too. Plus he would also give fans glimpses of Harrison Ford with his immaculate emulation of Harrison Ford.
Let’s hope whoever is chosen as Han Solo does justice to the benchmark set by Harrison Ford but the success won’t just depend on which actor plays Han Solo. As the story is based on the adventures of young Han Solo, there would be luxury for the franchise to cast other new faces for characters like Chewbacca and others. Only a good mix of character along with a good plot would win the hearts of Star Wars fans.
