Nominees Announced: The Greatest Snubs and Surprises at the 2023 Golden Globes

The most controversial Award show: “The Golden Globe” is returning to NBC in 2023. The nominations for the award show were announced on Monday, and along came the snubs and surprises that audiences may find shocking.

NBC had refused to air the awards show last year after a Los Angeles Times revelation that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) didn’t even have a single black member. This organization is responsible for voting on and awarding the Golden Globes.

Philip Berk, an HFPA member and former president called Black Lives Matter a “racist hate movement” in an email which didn’t help him. However, the same LA Times article also criticized the organization for its questionable ethical procedures and its legitimacy.

The HPFA tried to undertake and maintain reputation by including six new Black voters and promising that they absolutely would not accept any bribes this year. However, this was not enough to end the controversy.

Brendan Fraser, who is a possible ‘Best Actor’ nominee this season for his recent work has been outspoken about his claim that Berk, who resigned as HPFA president last year, sexually attacked him in 2003. When he made the allegations for the first time. Golden Globe ignored him on his stance.

Fraser recently said to GQ Magazine that he would not attend the awards show if he gets nominated. According to The Hollywood Reporter, other actors including Top Gun: Maverick’s Tom Cruise may join Fraser in boycotting the awards.

The Globes, however, are definitely hoping for a return, and thus the nominees were announced on Monday morning by George Lopez and his daughter, Mayan Lopez. Let’s dive right into the 2023 Golden Globes snubs and surprises below:

GOLDEN GLOBES 2023 SNUBS:

Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick
Although the new Top Gun might have nabbed a Best Film Drama nomination, but he himself was snubbed for the Golden Globes. Tom cruise decided to return his three Golden Globe trophies previous year for protesting the HPFA.

It is difficult to determine the reason why did the HFPA not recognize Tom Cruise for his performance in “Top Gun: Maverick,” the globally loved reboot to the Top Gun (1986). The film was honored with nominations for best picture, best drama, and best song (for “Hold My Hand” by Lady Gaga).

Sarah Polley for Women Talking

Sarah Polley for Women Talking
Are you serious? You’ll include Baz Luhrmann on your list of all-male Elvis directors, but not Polley?

Jessie Buckley for Women Talking

Jessie Buckley for Women Talking:
Buckley has been an evolving celebrity since her surprising Oscar nominations for last year’s The Lost Daughter. The HPFA seems to have a different opinion, snubbing her for the best actress in a drama recognition.

Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets
This hot new show about a girls’ soccer team surviving in the wilderness has been making the top of everyone’s list this year. Once again, the HPFA’s opinion regarding this fantastic show differs from that of the general audiences.

Will Smith for Emancipation

Will Smith for Emancipation
Will Smith was barred from attending the Academy Awards for a decade after punching Chris Rock at the Oscars last year, and the Globes chose not to invite him this year.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power"

Completely Overlooked – HFPA decided to disregard Amazon’s gorgeously equipped and stirringly performed rendition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

Sarah Jessica Parker for And Just Like That

Sarah Jessica Parker for And Just Like That

HFPA has always loved Sarah Jessica Parker, and as surprising as this snub seems, it’s true. She was nominated multiple times for “Sex and the City,” winning in 2000, 2002 and 2004. The HFPA nominated her for “The Family Stone” in 2006; it even nominated her in 2017 for the widely derided HBO series “Divorce”!

Keke Palmer for Nope

Keke Palmer for Nope

She offered one of the year’s top performances in Nope. For those clothes alone, she deserves a Best Actress nomination!

Rhea Seehorn for Better Call Saul

Rhea Seehorn for Better Call Saul
Seehorn deserves a nomination for Best TV Actress in a Supporting Role (Comedy/Drama) after providing one of the best TV performances of the year in Better Call Saul’s amazing final season.

Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King

Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King

Prince-Bythewood has been making the top of all kinds of director lists, but the HPFA didn’t reserve any slot for her in their nominations.

Ayo Edebiri for The Bear

Ayo Edebiri for The Bear
We get Jeremy Allen White love, but Edebiri is what makes this tough show sing. Snubbing her is really not what the viewers of this show would’ve expected.

Jennifer Lawrence for Causeway

Jennifer Lawrence for Causeway
If the new Jennifer Lawrence drama had been released in cinemas rather than on Apple TV+, the Oscar-winner would have surely been high in the running for the Best Actress race.

GOLDEN GLOBES 2023 SURPRISES:

Hilary Swank for Alaska Daily

Hilary Swank for Alaska Daily

No shade to Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank, but I don’t think anyone saw this nomination for her fish-out-of-water journalism show.

Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the Building

Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the Building
Selena Gomez was snubbed while her male co-stars were honored in the previous years. The Globes did the right thing then, giving Gomez the recognition she deserves.

Ana de Armas for Blonde

Ana de Armas for Blonde

Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe biography has been so divisive, it was probable that she would be excluded from the 2023 award season. How has the HPFA suddenly become so sensitive to controversial topics?

Adam Driver for White Noise

Adam Driver for White Noise

The HFPA chose Adam Driver’s performance in Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s famous 1985 book as an addled college lecturer. Driver is the lone nomination for the movie – no one expected this.

Babylon

“Babylon” Gets Way More Nominations Than Expected

It is referred to ancient Globes history to understand how “Babylon” did it. It’s the third-leading vote-getter with five votes, tied with “The Fabelmans” (behind “The Banshees of Inisherin” getting eight, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” getting six).

In other words, we must return to the extravagant spectacle that was Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!” “Moulin Rouge!” received six nominations from the Globes in 2001, and it went on to win three, including the top award for musical/comedy. We bring this up because Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” is another over-the-top spectacular that may make “Moulin Rouge” appear staid and boring!

Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

This was a pleasant surprise. Meanwhile, if a popcorn movie like Top Gun: Maverick is going to do the award circuit this year, why not Black Panther? Miss Angela Bassett deserves it!

HFPA is back with the announcement of the nominees for the “Golden Globes Awards”. The names are startling; some have been overlooked, while others have been given the chance to grab the moment for their roles. The Golden Global Awards show is likely to be held in the month of January 2023. Stay tuned for more updates about the Golden Globes.
