The $35 million annual payment Marvel pays Sony to keep the toy and merchandise earnings for Spider-Man at Marvel would be reduced if the new Marvel-produced Spider-Man film grossed more than $750 million (it did). Furthermore, while they profit from making a great Spider-Man movie, the two studios get to enjoy bringing the character greater popularity and worldwide recognition.
