Best comedy movies

Lately, the cinematic scene on Netflix and in general is highly focused on deep psychologically bending shows or crime and drug-related series such as Strangers things. But the charm of funny movies is still there. That’s why we have listed down the 30 best comedy movies on Netflix.

While it’s totally cool to see this new interest of filmmakers creating content that is highly engaging, in fact, so much so that people binge-watch series all night and are actually developing sleep problems.

Comedy movies come to the rescue on days when you want to watch something light and just relax. Here take a look at a compiled list of the funniest movies that you can binge-watch on Netflix!

Best Featured Comedy Movies on Netflix

The list is long, but here, I’ll talk about the movies I watched lately and started rolling on the floor laughing! So the below are my best picks:

1. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

IMDb Rating: 6.3

It is one of the best romantic comedies. The film found Roberts playing a single 28-year-old woman called by a close friend Michael (played by Dermot Mulroney), only to announce that he is getting married; this makes her realize her love for Michael. She then tries to sabotage her wedding with her fiancé, Rupert Everett, to call on envy.

2. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

IMDb Rating: 7.6

It is not written anywhere that you can watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation during the holiday season only, and now that the comedy classic is available on Netflix, you can watch it anytime you want.

The film, released in 1989, is the third in the Vacation series, following the iconic original and the subpar first sequel European Vacation. This one, of course, takes place during the holidays, with the Griswolds hosting extended family at their home.

Clark (Chevy Chase) is excessively depressed as he waits for a hoped-for bonus from his employer while still attempting to prevent his family from burning down his home. Some argue that Christmas Vacation isn’t funny because it’s too mean-spirited.

3. Superbad (2007)

IMDb Rating: 7.6

Superbad became a coming-of-age classic, with writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, director Greg Mottola, and producer Judd Apatow crafting a high school comedy that was equal parts heart and laughter.

Although the comedy is R-rated, the relationship between Michael Cera and Jonah Hill’s characters elevates this above the typical type of bogus comedy.

It’s as much a story about a kid concerned about losing a college friend as it is about trying to get alcohol for a high school party, and the sudden twists and turns make it all the more unforgettable.

4. Julie & Julia (2009)

IMDb Rating: 7

The story revolves around two women, Julie (Blogger) and Julia (Chef), whose stories get intertwined because of their love for food. The iconic writer-director Nora Ephron’s penned it like a delightful letter for her love of food. It will make you happy, sad, and hungry all at once. It is one of the best movies on Netflix Canada right now!

5. The Bling Ring (2013)

IMDb Rating: 5.6

A group of rich young boys and girls of Los Angeles rifle through celebrity homes and rob jewels and designer costumes. It is based on actual events, is a 2008 time capsule that also has a series of cameos by celebrities such as Juicy Couture tracksuits, Kirsten Dunst, and Paris Hilton.

6. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

IMDb Rating: 7.9

You should certainly check out the 2016 Search for the Wilderness if you’re a fan of the work of the Kiwi author, Taika Waititi.  The 13-year-old Ricky Baker and his stepfather escape the law in a charming and unorthodox tale in the woods of the city of New Zealand.

7. 50 First Dates (2004)

IMDb Rating: 6.8

50 First Dates are very amazing, as far as Adam Sandler’s romcom goes. The film was released in 2004 and follows a vet (Sandler), crossing the roads with a beautiful young woman (Drew Barrymore) and having a fun day.

But she doesn’t know who he is when he goes after her and asks her about a date the next day. As it seems, her memory loss is short, and her memory resets regularly.

Therefore he spends the remainder of the film day by day trying to get in touch with her. It is really sweet, honestly, and Barrymore and Sandler have great chemistry.

8. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)

IMDb Rating: 6.5

The Story of Fire Saga is yet another “stupid Will Ferrell comedy.” This musical comedy is a surprisingly fun and emotional one for 2020; this musical comedy is – don’t be shocked if you get thrilled by the end.

The plot follows a couple of Icelandic lifelong friends and singers who suddenly hit the Eurovision Song Contest, testing their skill and relationships.

It’s Rachel McAdams who steals this show here and reveals once again she’s one of the best comedic talents at the moment. The songs, oh? They’re amazing. They’re dramatic.

9. Between Two Ferns: The Movie (2019)

IMDb Rating: 6.1

In this available funny movie on Netflix, Between Two Ferns is on a nationwide redemptive tour following a catastrophic near-death event with interviewee Matthew McConaughey and Zach Galifianakis’s offbeat comedy series takes a feature-length treatment.

The painfully embarrassing, deadpan of Galifianakis is as attractive in this bustling car journey comedy as ever.

10. Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)

IMDb Rating: 7.4

The cast of this 2011 rom-com smash was terrific when it was out, but it looks even better now. Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, and Kevin Bacon star in this ensemble drama about the ups and downs of attempting to establish and sustain a relationship in the modern age.

11. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

IMDb Rating: 7.5

Will Ferrell plays the IRS auditor Harold Crick, who lives a relatively mundane life before beginning to hear a voice narrating every single move in his mind. He soon learns that he is the main character in author Karen Eiffel’s new novel.

This presents a challenge for Harold because Karen is known for killing her main characters in unusual ways. He joins forces with a professor, and the two set out to track down the author and convince her to amend the plot.

12. Other People (2016)

IMDb Rating: 6.8

Jesse Plemons as David – a comedy writer who has been struggling in New York, returns to Sacramento to look after his dying mother after a breach in the middle of his worst year of life. While the movie certainly comes under the umbrella of comedy, make sure the fabrics stay around. Molly Shannon is like you never saw a show.

13. Yes God Yes (2019)

IMDb Rating: 6.1

Natalia Dyer as Alice – a Catholic girl who experiences her first sexual experience after her chat on AOL turns racy. In order to overcome her new desires, she turns to a retreat in school. A different kind of late-night comedy movie available on Netflix that guarantees you a good laugh.

14. The Wrong Missy (2020)

IMDb Rating: 5.7

Tim thinks that he has found his dream girl, Missy, and he decides to invite her to retreat to Hawaii in his company. But if a girl from a previous blind nightmarish date, also called Missy, comes to know he’s written to the wrong woman and he’s gondola now.

15. The Death of Stalin (2017)

IMDb Rating: 7.2

Joseph Stalin’s cronies turn against each other in this ominous dark comedy written and directed by Veep’s Armando Ianucci in the wake of his death and chant the ultimate Soviet Russian influence.

The abundance of backstabbing and murder attempts, all enclosed in a devastatingly humorous parody of the takeover of political power.

16. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

IMDb Rating: 7.7

Bradley Cooper plays a bipolar patient, Pat, who spends a short period in a mental institution. Once done with that, Pat moves in with his parents in the hopes of getting his life back on track and, most importantly, his wife!

He gets to meet a young widow, Tiffany, in the process, who promises to help him get his wife back if he helps her win a dance competition.

17. The Lovebirds (2020)

IMDb Rating: 6.1

Jibran and Leilani get mixed up mistakenly in a murder case on the brink of breaking up. Both have a crazy night to clear the evidence to their names and possibly save their relationship.

18. Lady Bird (2017)

IMDb Rating: 7.4

This story coming from Greta Gerwig is not to be missed. More dramatic, less laugh-out humor. Saoirse Ronan, Beanie Feldstein, and Timothee Chalamet are more charming than ever and tell a warm and smartly funny tale about an extraordinary young woman who is trying to find her way around the world as she is preparing to go to school.

19. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

IMDb Rating: 6.9

Before Phil Lord and Chris Miller joined in with wildly enjoyable films such as The LEGO Movie and Jump Street movies – They wrote and directed the animated 2009 feature Cloudy with a chance of meatballs. And it is enjoyable.

The movie is entirely in the same vein as the other films of Lord and Miller; a mixture of goofy humor, gloriously complicated jokes, imaginative pictures, and above all, sincere compassion.

Bill Hader is referring to a hobbyist called Flint, who lives in a small town named Swallow Falls and who is threatened by wild inventories of Flint, which turn water into food.

20. Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)

IMDb Rating: 6.5

The 1998 movie Can’t Hardly Wait would be the perfect choice if you want your comedy with a heavy dose of nostalgia. This is your typical adolescent 90s sitcom, but there’s always some timeless charm.

On a high school graduation day, the story of different teenagers who tie up loose ends in a party follows before they go to school. Ethan Embry is the shy guy who just wants to confess his affection for his crush (Jennifer Love Hewitt), former children’s band BFFs, Lauren Ambrose and Seth Green, locked together into a bathroom and no longer able to behave like strangers.

21. Chef (2014)

IMDb Rating: 7.3

Chef Casper (Favreau) leaves his job at a flashy restaurant in Los Angeles to open a food truck together with his former wife (Sofia Vergara) and his best friend (John Leguizamo).

The film is filled with epic comedy scenes and dialogues. Also, on the bright side, Casper follows his real passion for food and promises himself to cook the best he can! And hence the food truck comes into play, where he cooks from his heart and passion.

For Robert Downy Jr. fans, brace yourselves; he’s the one who gets the food truck for Casper and has some appearance in the film!

22. Okja (2017)

IMDb Rating: 7.3

Okja, which is a bit more serious, is more of a satire than a full-fledged comedy. When the Mirando Corporation kidnaps Okja, an unnamed giant animal, for their own purposes, Okja’s 10-year-old friend Mija leaps into action to rescue him.

The story is cute and jolly, and if you’re one with a soft heart, you might notice a tear in your eye towards the end without even realizing it.

23. John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch (2019)

IMDb Rating: 7.5

Another in our list of top comedies on Netflix is John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch. It is very unusual and niche, but it is a joy to watch for its surrealism. Shot like a post-school activity, it switches rapidly into the strange territory and gets you hooked, making you not look back.

24. The Disaster Artist (2017)

IMDb Rating: 7.4

A film about making this infamously bad movie Technically, the Disaster Artist is a chronicle of how Tommy Wiseau defied any movie conventions (the worst) to make his movie, The Room. And how the film became a favourite cult in terms of its totally funny construction and implementation.

James Franco is legitimately fantastic both on and behind the camera. A shockingly emotional basis for this strange-the-fiction tale is also really, very funny, hones on the relationship between Tommy and Greg Sestero, Dave Franco. It is no doubt one of the best hilarious movies to stream on Netflix.

25. Hail, Caesar! (2016)

IMDb Rating: 6.3

The comedy by the Coen Brothers in 2016 had long been in existence and was somewhat undervalued though it was receiving solid reviews.

Hail, Caesar is a day in the life of the “fixer” Eddie Mannix, who spends the day trying to stop numerous sandals, put out fires, and find a missing cinema star in the movie studio named Capital Pictures in 1951.

It follows confusion and shenanigans, with George Clooney performing at his best. Another must-watch classic comedy movie on Netflix.

26. Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

IMDb Rating: 7.3

It is not just a really fun movie about artistic expression; it brings us to Netflix’s original comedy film Dolemite Is My Name, the best Eddie Murphy film in years.

The movie is based on the actual history of Rudy Ray Moore, the comedian who tried by writing, creating, and playing on an incredibly poor budget to get his hit stand-up character “Dolemite” to the masses.

This film is a funny backstage tale, not unlike Bowfinger, about one man’s artistic passion that comes against all odds to life. Murphy is volatile, Da’Vine Joy Randolph defines a breakthrough, and Wesley Snipes takes his position as director in a scandalous turn.

27. The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

IMDb Rating: 6.5

These days Netflix is based more on science fiction and theatre during its first few years of continuous production and, sorry, Adam Sandler, fans. There are not many great Netflix Original comedies.

One exception is this strike by Sundance, Jessica Williams’ fantastic car. The corresponding daily show stars as the title character, someone who tries to find happiness and love. In a movie that not enough people have seen, she is charming and delightful.

28. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

IMDb Rating: 7.5

Bryan Lee O’Malley’s exceptional comic adaptation by Edgar Wright didn’t find a lot of audiences after it was published, but over the years, it developed into a culture classic.

It follows Scott Pilgrim (Cera), a young man who falls for Ramona Flowers, a sweet but slightly selfish and misled person (Winstead). Only if he defied her seven evil exes would he manage to date her.

Scott is happy with the video game framework, but the film really tells about two people who find that they have to pass through their own baggage to find real love. With video game tropes and fun nudges, Wright decorates the whole picture but never loses sight of the core romantic story.

29. Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

IMDb Rating: 7.7

You’ve probably never seen anything like Stephen Chow’s masterpiece, the martial arts comedy from 2004. This worldwide hit, set in 1940s China, features some of the best stunts and is one of the funniest movies available on Netflix. It is so hilarious that sometimes it feels like a live-action cartoon. It’s funny and memorable.

30. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

IMDb Rating: 8.2

There are several specials and films from Monty Python on Netflix, but this probably remains the height of one of the most loved comedy troupes ever.

Holy Grail, a spoof of stories such as that of the Round Table Knights, is one of the highest quoted films ever, a satire that feels that it is playing somewhere in the world in a theatre, maybe every day at midnight. It actually never dwindles in popularity.

31. The Muppets (2011)

IMDb Rating: 7.1

Most of the Culture of Muppet is on the road to Disney+. But the modern version takes its inspiration from the 1910s for the current era. This one and the Muppets Most Wanted have landed on Netflix.

The James Bobin 2011 musical is easily one of the greatest Muppets movies of all time and one of the finest family movies of its time. It’s nice, intelligent, and understands why the gang, Ms. Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and others all love Kermit.

32. Wine Country (2019)

IMDb Rating: 5.4

Check out Wine Country if you’re looking for a simple, breezy look. While the directorial debut of Amy Poehler may not be the most satisfying or smooth comedy on the subject, it does constitute a solid effort full of ample laughter and a strong heart.

The film was inspired by a real-life trip on the occasion of Dratch’s 50th birthday, during which his relationship was revealed to casting members and real-life friends.

The actors are playing their own interpretations just slightly exaggerated, and so part of the fun is to see how dynamic these SNL alums are actually. This is a very simple watch, especially if you are looking to enjoy something with friends at night on a Friday or Saturday.

33. The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience (2019)

IMDb Rating: 7

I highly recommend The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience if you’re looking for a lot of laughs within a short time! A short film, accompanying a new Album from Lonely Island, the special is seen as an album made during the Bash Brothers by the giants of baseball Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, in the 1980s. Andy Samberg is playing Consultor, and Akiva Schaffer is playing McGwire, and it’s all delightfully dumb and amusing — just like the Lonely Island is playing.

34. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

IMDb Rating: 7.3

Nearly every film by Coen Brothers might in some way be classified as a comedy, and even their few plays are rich despite being dark. This certainly is true of the six-part Western anthology called The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which tells six different histories, range in terms of tonality but all touch on the same subject: death.

It’s called a comedy because at least three of those segments, including Tim Blake Nelson and James Franco, are directly involved. This is simply a long joke and is great for the first time. The new release is “Near Algodones.”

35. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

IMDb Rating: 7.1

The film is a delight from the beginning to the end, which helps you to revive a time when, without the pain, who “liked” you were most important in the world.

You’re not going to find much better on Netflix than on All the boys I have loved in the past if you are looking for a nice, sweet, YA romantic comedy.

Built on Jenny Han’s book, the story follows Lara Johann (Lana Condor), who has five letters to her hidden crushes; without her knowledge, the letters are leaked.
