Celine Dion’s Biopic ‘Aline’ To Be Exclusively Released In Theatres

Celine Dion, one of the most iconic singers of all time, gets a fictionalized biopic, “Aline.” Known for her powerful and skilled vocals, Dion’s music has been influenced by a variety of genres from rock, R&B, classical to gospel. Her song, “My Heart Will Go On,” featured in the James Cameron film Titanic, which won 11 Oscars.

“Aline” is loosely based on the life of Celine Dion and her sudden rise as a global figure in the world of music. The biopic has been jointly acquired by Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films for U.S. distribution. Last summer at the Cannes Film Festival, the film was received immensely well and appreciated for its informal approach of telling the life story of Dion.

The American audience will see the film exclusively in theatres only, with a rollout expected to start in early 2022. On the other hand, the French theatres will get the film on the 10th of November. Valérie Lemercier is one of France’s finest and most popular actors and stand-up comedians. She has directed and co-written the biopic with Brigitte But.

Lemercier also stars in the film as Aline Dieu, meant to be Celine Dion, growing up in 1960s Quebec in a closely tied family consisting of 13 siblings. The film further advances by telling her story as she is discovered by a successful producer, Guy Claude, meant to be René Angélil. As he realizes her talent and skillful voice, he sets out to make her the greatest singer in the world! The biopic shows Aline’s entire journey from being a kid to rising to heights of global stardom, focusing on her spectacular turnaround. The film also shows her relationship with her producer, who is also her mentor and later becomes her husband.

Lemercier told Variety in Cannes,

“A lot of things are invented, but I tried to be in the perfume of Celine’s life. Nothing is against her, but some things are invented to be more cinematic and romantic sometimes.”

Along with Lemercier, the cast of the film consists of Sylvain Marcel, Danielle Fichaud, Roc Lafortune, Antoine Vézina, Pascale Desrochers and Jean-Noël Brouté. Additionally, Victoria Sio was chosen for Aline’s singing voice.

In a joint statement, Roadside and Goldwyn said,

“Valérie’s tour de force performance as an emerging worldwide singing superstar created an enormous splash at Cannes this year, and we think American audiences will be every bit as thrilled to discover this one-of-a-kind entertainer in movie theatres early in 2022.”

VP of international sales and distribution at Gaumont, Alexis Cassanet, praised Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films, calling them “two emblematic independent U.S. distributors with an impressive track record and many awards to their credit.”

Aline is produced by Édouard Weil, Alice Girard at Rectangle Productions and Sidonie Dumas at Gaumont, in conjunction with Laurent Zeitoun. While the co-producers include André Rouleau, Valérie d’Auteuil, and Patrick Vandenbosch. De l’huile, Caramel Films, and Belga Productions co-produced with the joining-in of Entourage Pictures, Canal Plus, TF1, and Téléfilm Canada.

It is astounding that the film was produced with a budget of $25 million only and is one of the most anticipated French films scheduled for this year. “Aline” will be Lemercier’s sixth directorial project; her previous projects include “Quadrille,” “From Behind,” “Palais-Royal!” “The Ultimate Accessories” and “50 is the new 30.”
