Abuse Allegations Result in Hulu, Adult Swim Dropping Justin Roiland

Justin Roiland, the Creator of ‘Rick and Morty’, dropped by Hulu and Adult Swim.

It’s been a rough start to the year for Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the hit animated series ‘Rick and Morty’. The news broke on Wednesday, 25 January 2023 that both Hulu and Adult Swim have decided to drop the talented artist and writer, following allegations of abuse.

“We have ended our association with Justin Roiland,” declared 20th TV Animation and Hulu Originals in a statement issued.

This decision by Hulu came as a surprise to many fans of the hit animated comedy series, as Roiland was set to bring his unique brand of humor to the platform. However, the allegations against him made it impossible for the streaming giant to continue their partnership.

The co-creator and voice behind Hulu’s animated hits “Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man,” Justin Roiland, has been severed from the streaming outlet. However, both shows will continue production without him.

Similarly, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, the home of “Rick and Morty,” also cut ties with the voice actor and producer. Roiland lent his voice to the two central figures in “Rick and Morty” – a deranged scientist and his beloved grandson. He joined forces with Dan Harmon to bring the critically acclaimed series to life, which has been entertaining audiences for six successful seasons and is set for a seventh.

They declared their decision via twitter, saying: “Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland. Rick and Morty will continue. The talented and dedicated crew are hard at work on season seven.”

To top it off, Roiland has also stepped down from his role at Squanch Games, the video game developing initiative he co-founded. While sharing that the gaming company had, “received Justin Roiland’s resignation”, they stated that, “The passionate team at Squanch will keep developing games we know our fans will love while continuing to support and improve High On Life.”

The cause of the aforementioned turmoil is rooted in the charges against Roiland. In January 2020, the 42-year-old was accused of two counts of domestic violence against his former girlfriend, who he was living with, in Orange County, California. Despite pleading not guilty, Roiland is still waiting for trial.

According to a police report, the event, which is believed to have happened on or about January 19 of that same year, left the woman “in a traumatic condition.”

The news of the charges was not made public until it was reported by NBC News in January. Despite countless attempts to reach out, Roiland’s attorney and publicist have not responded to any emails for comment. His lawyer regarded his client as “innocent”, and further explained his stance, saying: “We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”

Prior to a trial, Mr. Roiland is scheduled to appear in court once again in April. He first appeared during a pre-trial hearing in January and he might spend up to seven years behind bars if declared guilty.
