A huge question mark lingered on the fate of Black Panther 2, after the death of Chadwick Boseman last year, many wondered if a new face would take on the role of the black superhero. Marvel Studios announced on Friday that it would not recast the iconic character played by Boseman. During Disney Investor Day, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke about the Black Panther sequel and announced details of the title character.

Feige announced that they would not be recasting the part out of respect for Boseman. However, with director Ryan Coogler at the helm, Marvel plans to continue telling the stories of the people of Wakanda.

According to a tweet by the studio, Black Panther 2 will “explore the world of Wakanda & the rich characters introduced in the first film.”

Black Panther 2 will be written and directed by Creed’s Ryan Coogler just like its first. The sequel is going to be released on 8 July, 2022.

During Disney’s Investor Showcase, the news was part of a slate of announcements that included the reveal that the company will release 10 Marvel series and 10 Star Wars series over the next few years.

These include Lando, based on the adventures of Lando Calrissian from Star Wars, Andor, based on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) from Rogue One and Ahsoka, the Mandalorian spin-off, starring Jedi Ahsoka Tano as Rosario Dawson.

A Fantastic Four movie, directed by Jon Watts, a Guardians of the Galaxy festive special, to be released in 2021, and I Am Groot, a Guardians spin-off based on Vin Diesel’s character, were among the Marvel projects revealed.

Boseman’s final film role comes in the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which will release on Netflix on 18 December.

For the studios, Black Panther was a huge success, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide. It became the first superhero film at the Oscars to be nominated for Best Film. Three trophies for original score, costume design, and production design were taken home for the film. The film signifies a generational change in the superhero genre, apart from the awards and commercial success, with the world becoming more diverse.
