In today’s day and age, it’s very hard to produce legacy sequels and reboots that honor the originals as much as the audiences do, given the revival of the original cast depends on the relatability factor with the new generation. When it comes to nostalgia, there are tons of movie gems out there, like Jurassic Word: Dominion, the entire Harry Potter franchise, and many others.

One of the most adored and successful sequels has been that of Netflix’s Cobra Kai which is a sequel to The Karate Kid.

Recently in an interview with ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian, Cobra Kai stars revealed their all-time favorite legacy sequels, and Ralph Macchio took no time in praising Top Gun: Maverick.

“I would have to say, since it’s so fresh, and I think they did everything right, I think the Top Gun sequel was really, really hit on all cylinders. It was just a perfect way to have a younger cast and handed down, and then the filmmaking and everything involved with that… They did everything right, I think. You know, every single frame just handled… this is a big Hollywood blockbuster with every stoned turned perfectly.”

Macchio’s fellow co-star, William Zabka shared his sentiments and said:

I agree with that, I have to piggyback on that one. I saw that in the theaters, I remember how I felt in the theaters at that time, and I honestly just wanted to thank Tom for that movie. I was like, ‘Thank you for that movie.’”

In June, Top Gun: Maverick surpassed $1 billion at the box office worldwide and became one of the biggest movies for Paramount Pictures. The sequel even outperformed some of the biggest movies in the past, like Titanic and the Avengers. Just recently, it also managed to one-up Avengers: Infinity War at the box office domestically.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, it has a critics score of 96%, whereas the audiences rating stands at 99%.

Spencer Perry of ComicBook.com gave the movie 4.5/5 and described it as a “rare sequel that outdoes the original in every way.”

Regarding his own TV series, Macchio might’ve possibly teased the creation of his own “Karate Kid Cinematic Universe.”

“The thing that’s been created, there’s kind of this Karate Kid Cinematic Universe now where Cobra Kai is, you know, at the center of that, and when that day does come in for a landing, there are other areas to draw from,” Macchio teased.

“I mean, whether it’s … Is there a Miyagi origin story? Is there a Cobra Kai prequel before The Karate Kid? Is there spin-offs with some of the young cast of these characters? Who knows? But we’re not done as long as we’re given the opportunity to really bring it in. As long as it evolves organically, these guys that write the show really have their finger on the pulse of that.”

He also added:

“There’s stuff that they wrote in Season 3 that didn’t happen until Season 4 ’cause there wasn’t any more room in Season 3. There’s stuff that was in Season 5 that we know we shot that is being held for the future if we get that green light, so there’s more to come, we hope.”

Cobra Kai’s fourth season ended with Daniel joining hands with his past arch-nemesis Chozen to take out Terry Silver and his dojo.

Cobra Kai season 5 will be premiering on Netflix on September 9th, whereas Top Gun: Maverick will be available on Blu-Ray, 4K UHD, and DVD on November 1st.
