The actress broke the ice about her “quiet, candid” path to soberness during an interview with This Morning.

Drew Barrymore reveals she has bid farewell to alcohol and has been sober for two and a half years now. The 46 years old actress shared her “quiet, confident” journey towards moderation during an interview with CBS This Morning on Thursday.

The confession came while discussing her forthcoming interview with Machine Gun Kelly for The Drew Barrymore Show. The duo opened up to one another about their past mental health issues. Barrymore also opened up about her separation from Will Kopelman in 2016 after nearly four years of marriage.

“I went through a really painful divorce and I wasn’t doing very well,” Barrymore revealed in a snippet of the complete interview, which will air on Friday.

“I had these two kids I had to fight for and I needed help. So I started reaching out to different people and eventually I made some big sweeping changes in my life. I got on a whole new track. Not back on track, but a whole new one that I helped build,” she stated.

Barrymore shared a sneak peek of her upcoming candid talk with Kelly. As he applied to paint on Barrymore’s nails, he revealed how he’s developed to be more emotionally honest and susceptible outside of his music.

“I think I’m new to being vulnerable outside of songs. I see a lot of pictures of me and there’s like, smiles on them,” he stated. “It’s just weird though because I didn’t feel good at all that day and I kind of am sick of smiling on days when I don’t feel like smiling.”

He further added, “And I feel like this odd pressure because I don’t want my fans to think that I’m taking something for granted — so if I accept an award and I’m super smiley, but behind the scenes, there was stuff going on…”

The singer, who expressed that he’d rather like to speak about “fun stuff” with Barrymore, also shared that “a lot of what I do is for other people, and I haven’t given myself the time to just accept that it’s OK to not be OK.”

Barrymore, 46, answered by stating she “likes him so much more” after hearing him open up about his struggles. She even shared her tough time and that she needed mental health assistance following her divorce in 2016 from Will Kopelman nearly fours years of marriage. Talking with CBS This Morning on Thursday, Barrymore specifically discussed that conversation with Kelly. She acknowledged that the interview went in a direction that wasn’t planned at all. If you have missed the interview, you can watch the highlights on the CBS channel.

“We were just set to do an interview about his nail polish,” she stated. “I was so surprised by his vulnerability.”

Barrymore also disclosed that she has “been very private with a lot of my struggles,” but expressed that society discourages being vulnerable with each other. She stated, “I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a revolt against the perfection right now that we are all forced to see and feel through social media,” she said. “We’re in an impasse and a crux of a moment where talking about how we figure ourselves out, how we fix ourselves takes a journey and solutions. Most people do it in private.”

Going a step ahead of being candid, Barrymore also confessed that it has been two years since she had been sober.

“It was something I realized just did not serve me and my life,” she stated about her decision to quit alcohol, further revealing that her journey was “quiet” and “confident.”

In the past, Barrymore has been sharing her mental health issues with her viewers. Earlier this year, in September, she went to the mental health institution where she was admitted for 18 months when she was 13 at that time.

“I was a real wild child and I just got so out of control that no one knew what to do with me,” Barrymore shared in an episode of her show. “They drove me here in the middle of the night and they walked me through those two doors and when you go through those two doors you do not come out. And I was there for a year and a half.”

“I think this is important for me to share with people because when they watch our show we have a very beautiful set and I get to dress in nice clothing and get my hair and makeup done and there is an elegance, hopefully, to the show,” the actress expressed. “But I will never lose sight of this part of my story and I have seen and been through things and they’ve helped me just recognize in all of us that we go through stuff.”

She further added, “And it can’t be embarrassing. It has to be our strengths, it has to be something that we can be proud of because we overcame it and we look back with honor and humor.”

Barrymore’s complete interview with Machine Gun Kelly will come on screen during Friday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.

Mental Health is a burning issue that is not talked about as much as it should. It’s a silent killer and has been becoming prevalent in recent years. If you face any kind of mental health issue or trauma, you must immediately consult a psychiatrist or even open up to your loved ones.
