Koffee With Karan Show Lands in Trouble for Plagiarizing Content

Koffe with Karan is under fire for plagiarized content

Koffee With Karan show which launched its season seven a couple of weeks ago came under fire for allegedly using information without permission, resulting in the show being called for plagiarism. One social media writer and journalist said that the show’s most recent episode that hosted Janhvi Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan, had stolen her concepts without mentioning any credits.

Koffee With Karan is a popular talk show where Karan Johar invites top celebrities to get indulged in gossip, discussions, lightly spiced-up controversies, fun, and lots of laughter. The show airs on Disney Plus Hotstar, which is not accessible in the US. However, here’s how you can watch all the episodes of Koffee with Karan’s latest season in the US.

This time the episode included a segment where the guests had to guess movie names based on poorly described scripts. The plagiarism allegation mentioned that the Koffee With Karan show  ‘lifted’ someone else’s work without giving due credit.

Manya Lohit Ahuja, a writer, and journalist said on Twitter that Karan’s “poorly described plot summary” for his own film Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, presented to the guests as part of the segment in the show, was plagiarized.

The 2001 blockbuster K3G’s description that Karan allegedly stole, read, “A grown man who can’t tie his shoelaces ends up accidentally revealing his hidden identity to his former nanny.”

Manya claimed to have created the description for Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in a post on the microblogging website. She included both her story and the pertinent Koffee With Karan Season 7 clip in her tweets.

The episode’s clip and an article that asked the same question were both posted on social media. The K3G question was part of an article headlined “Calling all Bollywood Buffs: Guess the movie with the help of these badly explained plots” and included the K3G question.

Manya wrote, “So #KoffeeWithKaran lifted the IP I started at @iDivaOfficial and used the whole copy verbatim??? I came up with this concept and I had a lot of fun writing these but to not be credited just because it was frivolous is not acceptable!? If you lift the copy, give the credit.”

She posted on Instagram as well, “I have decided that I cannot let this go. I want credit for my work— it may not be world-changing work, but it is mine nonetheless.”

Karan Johar, Disney Plus Hotstar, and author Shreemi Verma were all tagged in the post.

Being a renowned director of Bollywood, with almost every actor and actress wanting to work in his movies, the fans do not expect Karan Johar or his show to come under fire due to plagiarism accusations.

If the copyrights claims against Karan Johar are proven right in the court, he might have to face serious consequences including monetary fines and even months of time in prison.
