Disney Plus is Giving Marvel Movies a Big IMAX Upgrade

Get excited, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. It’s time to turn your lounge into a mini cinema.

Just as Eternals released in theaters on November 05, 2021, Walt Disney is getting ready to premiere Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings on its online streaming platform Disney Plus.

The news was revealed today as part of plans shared by Disney for Disney Plus Day, where Disney will be celebrating the second anniversary of streaming service on November 12. The addition of the IMAX format might format indicates that upcoming MCU movies will be available in the improved HD format as they get to the Disney Plus library just like Shang-Chi.

Disney is all set to reveal updates and announcements on upcoming projects, including MCU projects. And Disney has another surprise in the box for Marvel fans. Disney has decided to upgrade several MCU movies available on Disney Plus in IMAX format, which will surely improve the MCU experience even more right on your TV screens.

What’s Going to Change?

The IMAX format will allow subscribers to watch some of the MCU movies with a screen size that’s 26% taller than the normal widescreen format. However, IMAX content isn’t always perfect for TV screens, and with the IMAX format enabled, you can see more vertical content, so the black border at the top and bottom of the screen goes away. That’s an ideal format for some action shots, especially in superhero movies like the Marvel series and x men series.

However, Disney is going to improvise slightly with the Marvel movies getting the IMAX upgrade. Disney and IMAX will implement an Expanded Aspect Ratio, which is 1.90:1. That way, “more of the action is visible on screen, just as the filmmakers intended,” as per the announcement made.

Since the IMAX format is preferred for many blockbuster movies nowadays, including MCU films, this particular option will enable viewers to turn their lounges into a mini cinema hall, given that their TV or projector supports the format. Wondering whether you should opt to watch a movie in the IMAX format on a regular widescreen TV? Well, you might get black bars on the side of the screen, making the screen look smaller horizontally. But this might be worth giving a try, as the IMAX format on Disney Plus also offers the immersive DTS audio format used in the movie theaters that will uplift your watching experience.

What Marvel movies get IMAX support on Disney Plus?

Marvel has released a total of 26 films so far, including Eternals, although it’s not available on Disney Plus for now. The two other films not available on Disney Plus are the Spider-Man series that Marvel produced with Sony. So that makes a count of 23 MCU films available to watch on Disney Plus right now.

As far as the Marvel films streaming in IMAX are concerned, not all 23 movies will have IMAX scenes available. A few of them were completely shot in IMAX formats, like Endgame and Infinity War. Other releases have only a few minutes of scenes available in IMAX action.

Following is the list of 13 Marvel movies with IMAX action available on Disney Plus. The list is in alphabetical order; not to be confused with the MCU chronological order:

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Black Panther
  • Black Widow
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Captain Marvel
  • Doctor Strange
  • Iron Man
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
  • Thor: Ragnarok

Final Thoughts

Disney always tends to provide the best watching experience for its subscribers, and the introduction of the IMAX format for MCU films is a clear indication of that. Amid all the pandemic dangers, what will be better than enjoying a film sitting on your couch with a movie-theater experience? It certainly can’t get better than that!

Enjoy your MCU films with a pop-corn bucket in your lap as you are sitting in a cinema!
