Mia Goth Speaks out Against Oscar Snub of Horror Genre

Mia-Goth-Addresses-Oscars-Not-Taking-Horror-Seriously-‘A-Change-Is-Necessary

Actress Mia Goth, known for her roles in horror films such as “A Cure for Wellness” and “Suspiria,” is making headlines for her bold statement about Oscar’s neglect of the horror genre. The Academy Awards have a history of ignoring the horror genre, and it’s been no different this time. History tells us horror movies have had a difficult time being nominated for the awards, and Goth feels that the issue rests in how people perceive the horror genre.

In an interview with Variety, Goth expressed frustration with the lack of recognition for horror films at the prestigious awards ceremony. “I think that it’s very political and that it’s not entirely based on the quality of a project per se,” Goth told reporter Jake Hamilton (see below) of the lack of genre diversity among the nominees. “I think there’s a lot going on there, a lot of cooks in the kitchen when it comes to nominations and categories that are recognized. Maybe I shouldn’t say that either, but I think that’s true. I think a lot of people know that. I don’t know why.” Goth Continued, “I think a change is necessary. A shift should take place, really. If they wanted to engage with the wider public, I think it would be of benefit, really.”

The star of “Infinity Pool” and “Pearl,” who recently discussed what it means to be a scream queen at the Sundance, has spoken out against the Academy’s failure to recognize horror films, especially in the acting categories.

The Academy has rarely honored horror films in the past0. Some horror successes include awards for best film to The Silence of the Lambs and best original screenplay to Get Out by director Jordan Peele. The Sixth Sense was also nominated for best picture, best director, best supporting actor and a few other titles. A couple other names that got recognized in major categories are “The Excorcist” and “Jaws”. However, there aren’t many other notable nominations, and like most of the times before, the horror genre has been overlooked at the Oscars this year as well.

Do you think Mia Goth’s performance was worth an Oscar, and is it true that the academy awards always ignore the horror genre? Let us know!

Despite being overlooked by the Academy, IndieWire named Goth’s performance in Ti West’s “X” sequel “Pearl” as one of the year’s greatest. Toni Collette’s frightening performance in Ari Aster’s “Hereditary” was just nominated for a Critics Choice Award but was snubbed by the Academy Awards.

The 2018 edition of “Nope” was also ignored for nominations. In addition to the film’s lauded technical achievement, star Keke Palmer won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress, putting her in contention for an Academy Award nomination in 2023. Famous horror movies, including “Psycho,” “The Witch,” “The Thing,” “Carrie,” and “Poltergeist,” have never been nominated for an Academy Award. The thriller “Parasite” made history as the first film from outside the United States to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The audience is showing support for the Mia Goth character in the latest horror movie. Not getting an oscar nomination is considered one of the repeated snubs by the Academy Awards.

While promoting her new film “Infinity Pool” at the Sundance, Goth spoke about the viral popularity of “Pearl,” which has been characterized by the actress “I’m a star” burst. “I knew it was an important moment in the script,” Goth said. “I didn’t necessarily know how big it was going to be. I don’t like to think through the scenes in too much detail, to be honest. I do all of my prep, but I honestly think that my body always has far better ideas than my head does.” Goth Continued.

It remains to be seen if the Oscars will make any changes to its approach to horror films, but one thing is for sure: Mia Goth’s bold statement has brought the issue to the forefront. The horror genre has long been overlooked, but with the support of influential figures like Goth, it may finally get the recognition it deserves. Even people have praised Mia Goth for her character as Maxine minx in X (2022).
