Brendan Fraser secured the role in “Airheads” due to Adam Sandler’s ultimatum to withdraw from the movie unless Fraser was cast as a lead.

Sandler jokingly mentioned discovering a young Fraser and “stealing” him from Pauly Shore after the success of the film “Encino Man” in 1992, where Fraser portrayed a caveman acquainted with modern life by two high schoolers, played by Sean Astin and Shore.

In a conversation during Variety’s Actors on Actors, Sandler recalled seeing Fraser’s character and suggesting, “He shouldn’t just be a caveman – he should be in a band.”

Their first collaboration occurred in the 1994 film “Airheads,” where they portrayed band members desperate for fame, resorting to hijacking a radio station. Sandler revealed his struggle to have Fraser cast as the lead singer alongside Steve Buscemi as the bassist.

Despite their “not-so-skilled acting musician” roles, they soon became highly sought-after in Hollywood.

Recently reminiscing about their time shooting “Airheads,” Sandler and Fraser’s camaraderie is the kind of behind-the-scenes insight that movie enthusiasts appreciate.

Fraser gained fame initially for his role as an unfrozen caveman in “Encino Man” opposite Pauly Shore. Subsequently, his career took off with movies like “The Mummy,” “George of the Jungle,” and “Bedazzled.” Even today, in Sandler’s portrayal of an NBA coach in one of Netflix’s top shows, “Hustle,” he remains supportive of Fraser.

Fraser’s return in Darren Aronofsky’s film “The Whale” saw him play a 600-pound English instructor, earning praise and a standing ovation at its Venice debut. His emotive acting style connects deeply with audiences, evident when Sandler expressed how the movie moved him emotionally.

Sandler’s advocacy for Fraser to join the cast of “Airheads” stemmed from their previous collaboration in “Encino Man.” Despite initial resistance from the director, Sandler persisted, eventually securing Fraser’s role in the film.

The behind-the-scenes struggles and subsequent success in “Airheads” solidified their friendship. Sandler is happy that Brandon Fraser did Airheads. “I’m happy you were the leader of the band, the Lone Rangers,” he said. “Buscemi, my brother in the movie, loved you. Ultimately, we got our tune on the air. People liked it.”

Sander called the experience “one of the best shoots of my life, without a doubt.”

Despite initial doubts from some involved, Fraser’s performance was lauded, making the shoot one of Sandler’s most memorable experiences.

Reflecting on the past, Fraser recalled the flattering encounter with Director Michael Lehmann, who flew out to persuade him to join the project. Fraser remarked, “That serious filmmaker traveling to tell me, ‘Hey, I believe you should do this,’ was incredibly flattering.”

Fraser reminisced about his life in Los Angeles, living in his car and apartment, not being a musician, yet receiving encouragement from Lehmann despite the circumstances.
