Steve Carell has been nominated for 19 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards over a 16-year period, leaving him just four nominations short of breaking Edie Falco’s record. His most recent nomination is for his performance in FX on Hulu’s “The Patient,” which marks his 15th nomination for his work on television and his first in the Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor category. Even if he does not win, Carell has set a significant milestone by being the first person to receive SAG Awards recognition in eight different categories.
In “The Patient,” Carell portrays Dr. Alan Strauss, a widowed psychiatrist who is held captive by Sam Fortner, his new patient, for an undetermined duration (Domhnall Gleeson). Strauss initially feels helpless as the mentally sick serial murderer demands that they find a way to heal him, but after looking back at his own past, the doctor gradually regains some control over their dynamic. Moving towards his award records, despite the fact that all four of Carell’s current rivals have previously been SAG Award candidates, he stands out as the lone victor among them. The only other TV nominee is Evan Peters (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), who was only recently honored in this category for “Mare of Easttown” last year. Sam Elliott (“1883”) and Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”), each have one film ensemble bid to their names (for the respective movies “A Star Is Born” from 2018 and “DA 5 Bloods” from 2020). In addition to Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”), Elliott’s rival for the role of “A Star Is Born” in the upcoming film “Rocketman” also garnered an individual nomination.
Carell’s own history with the SAG Awards dates back to 2007, when he took home the Best Cinema Ensemble prize for “Little Miss Sunshine” and the Best TV Comedy Ensemble prize for “The Office,” as well as a solo nomination for the aforementioned shows. He won a second collective prize in 2008 after receiving five more individual and cast nominations for “The Office” over the ensuing five years. Before receiving his first Best TV Drama Actor (2020) and Ensemble (2022) nods for his performance on “The Morning Show,” he received film nominations for “Foxcatcher” (lead, 2015), “The Big Short” (ensemble, 2016), and “Battle of the Sexes” (supporting, 2018).

Other than Falco, only Julia Louis-Dreyfus (21 nominations), Alec Baldwin (20 nominations), and Julianna Margulies had more SAG Award nominations than Carell (20). He clearly follows Baldwin, whose nominations are only split over five categories, when only male performers are taken into account. Carell and David Hyde Pierce, who received 10 ensembles, 8 individuals, and 1 cast nominations for “Frasier” between 1995 and 2004 and one nomination for “Nixon” in 1996, are tied for second place. Carell will join Baldwin on the list of 26 men who have won four or more SAG awards if he is successful this time.
