The show is still among the longest-running scripted shows on the network. The Blacklist is going to stay on NBC for another season. For a ninth season in 2021-22, the network has renewed the drama. The pickup comes after only three episodes of season eight have aired, largely due to production delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic at the beginning of the season.
The Blacklist remains a big profit driver for Sony Pictures TV’s lead studio, with solid foreign revenues and a very profitable Netflix streaming contract. NBCUniversal is sharing out-of-network revenue due to the company’s 50 percent interest in the program, giving the network an extra incentive to keep it on air.

At present, behind only Law & Order: SVU and Chicago Fire, The Blacklist is the third-longest-running scripted series on NBC. The James Spader- and Megan Boone-led series remains a consistent performer on Friday nights, with its first two episodes averaging a 1.2 rating in the primary ad demographic of adults 18-49 and 7.2 million viewers, including delayed viewing and streaming to date.
(Chicago PD is now in its eighth season but debuted a few months later.) Both figures are more than double the original numbers for the show (0.4 and 3.6 million).
The show is also very much in demand on Netflix: Per Nielsen, The Blacklist ranked ninth among all the streaming series acquired in 2020 with almost 14.5 billion minutes of viewing time.
Together with Spader and Boone, the cast includes Diego Klattenhoff, Amir Arison, Hisham Tawfiq, Laura Sohn and Harry Lennix.
