Tribeca Film Festival 2022 is Set to Open With Screening of Jennifer Lopez’s Netflix Documentary ‘Halftime’

Jennifer Lopez’s upcoming Netflix documentary ‘Halftime’ is soon to be screened on the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival 2022. This announcement came on Wednesday that the documentary of the 52-year-old pop singer/actress will debut at the annual event on 8th June 2022.

The star took to Twitter and shared the cover of the documentary with her fans with the caption, It’s just the beginning. Halftime, a @Netflix Documentary about Jennifer Lopez, releasing June 14.”

 

The iconic award-winning star behind songs like Jenny from the Block,” “Let’s Get Loud,” and “Waiting for Tonighthas been working closely with Netflix on this production. The title ‘Halftime’ refers to her globally acclaimed performance at the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show.

The halftime show has an annual tradition of being the most powerful, just like it was this year, with stars like Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, etc. 

The Journey takes us through the star’s days as an actress earning initial fame from features like My Family (1995), Selena (1997), and Out of Sight (1998).

She also holds the title of being the first Latina actress to earn $1 million for her film role in Selena. The Tribeca film festival will kickstart with the documentary’s premiere at the United Palace in Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan.

Netflix’s ‘Halftime’ was directed by Tribeca Alum Amanda Micheli who covered Lopez’s journey from the start, with a special focus on the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Tribeca shares, “Halftime offers an intimate peek behind the curtain revealing the grit and determination that makes Jennifer Lopez the icon she is, from her performances onscreen and on stages around the world, to her Super Bowl Halftime show, to the recent Presidential inauguration.”

She further shares, “The documentary focuses on an international superstar who has inspired people for decades with her perseverance, creative brilliance, and cultural contributions. And it’s only the beginning. Halftime serves as the kickoff to the second half of Lopez’s life, as she lays bare her evolution as a Latina, a mother, and an artist, taking agency in her career and using her voice for a greater purpose.” 

The screening location of the documentary fits well with the theme considering Jennifer Lopez grew up in the Bronx, which is just a few minutes away from the United Palace.

The director Micheli shares her experience of directing, “It’s an honor to be selected for the opening night of Tribeca, and so fitting to be celebrating this critical milestone in Jennifer’s life and career just miles from where she grew up! To have the opportunity to share this film on the big screen with a New York audience is a dream come true.”

The CEO of Tribeca Enterprises and co-founder of Tribeca Festival, Jane Rosenthal shared, “The Tribeca Festival has always been an activist festival — a celebration of entertainment and innovation in the midst of remarkable challenges. We’re thrilled to open with ‘Halftime’ an inspirational documentary that spotlights Jennifer Lopez’s activism through her iconic Super Bowl halftime show.”

The Tribeca Film Festival has evolved from the lower Manhattan hub and is now screening in various places like Pier 57, Spring Studios, United Palace, Battery Park City, Waterfront Plaza, SVA Theater, and  Beacon Theater.

Even the co-founder of Tribeca and famed actor, Robert De Niro, shares how the documentary reminds the audience of “Powerful Storytelling.” He shares, “The Tribeca Festival is eager to bring audiences from all over the world together to honor the importance of purpose-driven creative expression.”

The documentary’s announcement has had the fans excited for the premiere, as the documentary is set to release on 14th June after the debut at Tribeca Film Festival, which runs through 8th – 19th June 2022.
