H.E.R. Paid Tribute to the Legend Marvin Gaye at PCA 2021

Honoring the legend!

H.E.R. just took the stage at the People’s Choice Awards on Tuesday on its 50th anniversary to honor Marvin Gaye with a performance of “What’s Going On.” And anyone who did watch the People’s Choice Awards loved the performance!

“What’s Going On” was the famous title song of Gaye’s 1971 album, which included other chartbusters such as Inner City Blues, Mercy Mercy Me, and What’s Happening Brother.

Earlier during this year, H.E.R. also honored Gaye by recording “Inner City Blues” for Juneteenth with Apple Music.

“The simple hook of ‘Make me wanna holler, the way they do my life—as if my life is of lesser value than someone’s else’s. I just thought there was so much power in that message and that it applies to now. It’s one of those songs that we play and still relate to today,” H.E.R. shared feelings about the song at the time.

H.E.R. also performed both “Inner City Blues” and “What’s Going On” at the Apollo Theatre in New York City while appearing on-stage at SiriusXM Small Stage Series.

Talking about Gaye’s legacy, he was shot and killed by his father in 1984. The legendary singer won three Grammy awards and is considered one of the most revolutionary artists in history. He was awarded two Grammys for his song “Sexual Healing” and a subsequent lifetime achievement award at the 1997 Grammys.

Although all of Gaye’s tracks were impressive; however, I Heard It Through the Grapevine, Sexual Healing, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, and Let’s Get It On are considered his greatest hits.

For People’s Choice Awards 2021, F9 sits at the top of the ‘film’ categories with eight nominations, while TV categories are led by This Is Us with six nominations. Whereas Justin Bieber is nominated for 10 different categories.

BTS swept the last year’s ceremony with four awards when Demi Lovato hosted the event.

Music Icon award is up for grabs by Aguilera, while Halle Berry is all but confirmed to receive the People’s Icon award from the hands of Cardi B.

The 2021 People’s Choice Awards will be hosted by Kenan Thompson. The award show is airing on NBC and E! simultaneously.
