Whoopi Goldberg Apologizes On Twitter After Using Ethnic Slur On The View

Whoopi Goldberg has once again swiftly apologized after using an ethnic slur during The Views March 15 broadcast. The panel of women was discussing the 2020 presidential race when the moderator used an ethnic slur often used to refer to Romani people. Once the program aired, the actress and show host instantly turned to Twitter to apologize and explain why she said what she did.

The panel was discussing President Trump and the 2020 election in the program, when Goldberg made a joke about people still feeling he got cheated during the election, but instead of saying cheated, she used a slur, which is muted out of the episode on Hulu.

Here’s a clip of the original program:

She then apologized for her use of the word in a video posted on The View’s Twitter account not long after the show aired.

In her apology Goldberg said:

“You know, when you’re a certain age you use words that you know from when you’re a kid or you remember saying and that’s what I did today, and I shouldn’t have. I should have thought about it a little longer before I said it, but I didn’t. And I should have said cheated, and I used another word, and I’m really, really sorry.”

Whoopi agreed that using the pejorative phrase on the March 15 program was incorrect and that she should not have done so.

The actor’s fans were more than understanding when the apology came, with one of them saying: “Love Whoopi. I had no idea anyone took offense. She’s educating me and many others bc I had no idea anyone found offense in the term. Thanks, Whoopi for teaching us!”

Others also thanked her for enlightening them about the slur and being open about the faux pas: “I have to admit I did not realize that word was offensive. Glad I know it now.”

“Kudos to any adult who apologizes when wrong. So many words I heard as a kid and later used until I “awoke” to the fact they were offensive slurs,” a third person commented.

This isn’t the first time Goldberg has had to apologize for saying something inappropriate on The View. In January 2022, she made a contentious remark on the Holocaust and how anti-Semitic behavior is not necessarily synonymous with racism. She quickly apologized in this instance as well, telling Stephen Colbert that she was wrong and that she was “sorry for the hurt I have caused.”

After her statements, she was suspended for two weeks from the ABC talk show, and over a year later, the debate about what she said resurfaced, after which, in December 2022, Goldberg once again issued a statement explaining what she meant to say at the time and what she has learned since then.

Part of the statement read:

“I’m still learning a lot and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me. I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt, and angered people.”

On The View, Whoopi Goldberg has never been reluctant to voice her open and unvarnished ideas, in fact, that is what has made her so popular among the show’s fans. She’s said she doesn’t enjoy her seat at the show’s table, praised Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles for how it tackles racism, and spoken out against the racial representation in fantasy series like Rings of Power.

These are only a few instances from the previous year. The moderator/actor is not hesitant to say what she thinks, and there have been times when she has said something she shouldn’t have and had to apologize while emphasizing that she has learned from her mistakes.

The View airs on ABC every weekday on the 2023 TV schedule and episodes are available on Hulu the next day. Here’s how you can watch The View on Hulu outside US.
