Yesterday, I watched something extraordinary on American Idol 2024. They paid tribute to Mandisa, an amazing singer from season 5 who sadly passed away on April 18, 2024, at the age of 47. But instead of being miserable, American Idol celebrated her life and music!

Friends Singing for a Friend

Three of Mandisa’s fellow American Idol alumni, Colton Dixon, Danny Gokey, and Melinda Doolittle, returned to the stage to perform one of her iconic songs, “Shackles (Praise You).” This energetic and uplifting song about praising God was instrumental in launching Mandisa’s career.

Personally, “Shackles (Praise You)” holds a special place in my heart. Whenever I feel demotivated, I put on my headphones and let Mandisa’s powerful lyrics wash over me. Lines like,

“Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance, I just wanna praise You,” and “You broke the chains, now I can lift my hands, And I’m gonna praise You”

These lines remind me to break free from negativity and find strength in gratitude and faith. Click here to listen to the entire song

Remembering a Shining Star

Before the performance, everyone talked about how much they loved Mandisa. The show’s host, Ryan Seacrest, said she inspired everyone and that they would miss her dearly. Another famous singer, Jennifer Hudson, also on American Idol 2024, wrote online that Mandisa was a bright light and a woman of faith.

Mandisa: A Voice of Hope

Mandisa wasn’t just a great singer but a good person. She used her music to help people who were going through tough times. She sang about being strong, overcoming challenges, and having hope.

After her time on American Idol, she went on to release five more studio albums, sharing her message of hope and faith with the world. Her album “Overcomer” even earned her a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album in 2014.

In her memoir, “Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy,” and her podcast of the same name, Mandisa bravely opened up about her battle with depression, offering support and encouragement to others facing similar challenges.

A Journey that Began with “Fallin'”

Back in 2006, Mandisa first stepped onto the American Idol stage, captivating the judges and audience with her powerful rendition of Alicia Keys’ “Fallin‘”. The judges, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and even the notoriously critical Simon Cowell, were blown away by her talent.

With three enthusiastic YESES, Mandisa earned her golden ticket to Hollywood, embarking on a journey that would touch the hearts of millions. (Click the link below to watch her unforgettable audition!)
