The 77th Cannes Film Festival is set to take place from Tuesday, May 14, 2024, to Saturday, May 25, 2024. This year, the jury will be led by Greta Gerwig, the director known for her recent success with the film “Barbie.” Joining her are prominent actors such as Eva Green and Omar Sy, along with Lily Gladstone, who celebrated her historic Oscar nomination.

Eva Green is recognized for her roles in films like “Casino Royale,” and Omar Sy is widely recognized for his performance in “Lupin.” Together with Lily Gladstone, who gained acclaim for her role in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” they bring a comprehensive variety of experiences to the jury.

The rest of the jury includes several notable figures in the film industry: Hirokazu Kore-eda from Japan, a previous Cannes winner; Nadine Labaki from Lebanon, known for her award-winning film “Capernaum”; Spanish director J.A. Bayona; Italian actor Pierfrancisco Favino; and Turkish screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, who frequently collaborates with her husband, director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

The festival will showcase a lineup of exciting films, including “Parthenope” by Paolo Sorrentino, “Kinds of Kindness” by Yorgos Lanthimos, and “Megalopolis” by Francis Ford Coppola. There are also standout entries such as a biopic about Donald Trump titled “The Apprentice” and “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski.

Additionally, filmmaker Oliver Stone will present his latest documentary, “Lula,” about Brazil’s president, outside the main competition. The Un Certain Regard section will be led by Xavier Dolan, with Belgian actress Lubna Azabal and Belgian-Congolese filmmaker Baloji heading other juries.

The festival will conclude on May 25, 2024, with the announcement of the Palme d’Or winner, marking the end of another thrilling edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

A New Era at Cannes

Greta Gerwig, aged 40 and renowned as an actor and screenwriter, takes over the presidency of Ruben Ostlund, whose jury awarded the 2023 Palme d’Or to the courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall.”

According to the festival’s statement, she marks a historic moment as the first American woman filmmaker to assume this prestigious role. Gerwig’s appointment introduces a youthful dynamic to the festival, not seen since Sophia Loren led the jury in 1966 at 31.

Moreover, Gerwig is the first woman to hold this position since Cate Blanchett in 2018, highlighting a significant moment where men are typically overrepresented.
