Chris Pine, well-known for his roles in the first two Wonder Woman films, recently expressed his astonishment in an interview about the unexpected cancellation of the third installment of the superhero saga.
The actor, who was promoting his directorial debut “Poolman,” shared his disbelief that Warner Bros. would discontinue a franchise that nearly amassed $1 billion globally.
“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine remarked. He acknowledged that the reasoning behind this decision was beyond his understanding, praising the character of Wonder Woman and director Patty Jenkins’s exceptional contributions to the series.
A Surprising Shift in Strategy
In the films, Pine portrayed Steve Trevor, the love interest of Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. He emphasized that any plans to bring his character back in the third movie would have been implausible, as Trevor’s storyline had effectively concluded. “Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo.
It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back,” Pine stated, reflecting on his character’s narrative arc.
The decision to cancel ‘Wonder Woman 3’ coincided with the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, who are set to revamp the DC Comics Extended Universe.
Under their leadership, the focus appears to be shifting away from some existing storylines, including that of Wonder Woman, as they plan a new direction for the franchise.
Pine initially hesitated to accept the role of Steve Trevor, fearing it would sideline him to just the protagonist’s boyfriend.
However, a conversation with Jenkins changed his mind; she described the film as a sweeping romance similar to ‘Casablanca,’ rather than a typical superhero blockbuster. This vision ultimately persuaded him to join the project.
This announcement followed reports that Jenkins’ vision for the third film clashed with the new direction planned by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Consequently, this misalignment led to her departure from the project.
Patty Jenkins confirmed on the “Talking Pictures” podcast in March that her involvement with the Wonder Woman series might indeed be concluded for good.
