The sudden cancellation of NCIS: Hawai’i left its devoted fanbase reeling after the final episode aired with a dramatic cliffhanger.

The police procedural, a popular spin-off of the long-standing NCIS franchise, was unexpectedly cut short by CBS, ending its three-season run on a note that sparked a wave of frustration and unanswered questions.

The series finale, aired on May 6, gave the cast members their final send-off in an emotional farewell scene where lead character Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) enjoys a surprise party with her team. But this was not where the story ended.

Jane returns home to find her old mentor, Maggie (Julie White), delivering a chilling message: “Janie, you’re probably going to need a drink for what’s coming next.” This ominous moment left fans on edge, and the sudden cancellation made it clear they would never learn what this warning foreshadowed.

Viewers did not hold back on social media, voicing their anger over the unresolved ending. One furious fan expressed,

“To leave fans with this cliffhanger is just wrong. At least bring it back with the answer to the question.”

Another tweeted,

“When you end something, it’s supposed to be done, but it didn’t end!! I’ll always wonder what was supposed to happen next.”

Meanwhile, Vanessa Lachey herself took to Instagram, posting a heartfelt farewell to her character and the series she called home. “This show meant so much to me… and more every day, I find, to lots of people,” she wrote. “As an AAPI Woman, Wife, Mother, Colleague, & Friend, I am more proud than ever to have been your Jane Tennant on TV.”

Acknowledging the bittersweet reality of the series’ abrupt end, she shared her gratitude for the experience:

“This journey has taught me to continue to push the envelope and break glass ceilings. I encourage you ALL to as well!” Lachey also expressed how “gutted, confused, [and] blindsided” she felt after hearing the news, adding, “I wish we had a proper goodbye, I’m sorry we didn’t.”

Despite the cancellation, Lachey highlighted the show’s accomplishments, like how NCIS: Hawai’i achieved a viewership of over 10.1 million during its 35-day viewing cycle across four new episodes.

She reminisced about how the show grew from being “the #1 new series” at its debut to something even more impactful. In her Instagram Stories, she shared a throwback picture with co-star Noah Mills, praising the “team” that made it all possible.

Some fans remain motivated, however, determined to fight for the show’s renewal.

“The cliffhanger motivates us to keep fighting because NCIS: Hawai’i’s story isn’t over, and there’s more to tell,” one wrote, rallying for support under the hashtag #SaveNCISHawaii.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding NCIS: Hawai’i’s future, its legacy continues to resonate with viewers who are not ready to say goodbye.

With a petition gaining traction and a vocal fanbase rallying on social media, perhaps the story of Jane Tennant and her team might still have another chapter to tell.
