History of the World Part 2 Sequel Depends on Hulu, Says Showrunner

The sequel of History of the World Part I has been in the making for 40 years. Mel Brooks has been trying to accomplish the creation of  History of the World Part 2 since Part 1 was first released in theaters. Executive producer Davis Stassen, however, believes that if Hulu decides to renew the show, Brooks will have to come up with the third instalment much faster.

During an interview, Stassen — who serves as showrunner on the Brooks-produced Hulu series — admitted that the series was not created with a sequel in mind, necessarily. But they certainly would jump at the opportunity to make one.

“I hope so,” Stassen said when asked if there will ever be a third part. “I’d be lucky to get to work on it again; I hope Hulu, however they decide, whether it’s the numbers or whatever, I hope it does well, and they want to do it again. It’s a possibility, but we haven’t been told anything yet. Maybe they just want to make sure it’s not the least successful sketch show of all time.”

The official synopsis for History of the World Part II has been written in a manner that gives away very little. It reads: “There is finally a sequel to the seminal Mel Brooks film, HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART I, with each episode featuring a variety of sketches that take us through different periods of human history.”

Showrunners also announced the lineup for the first episode on Twitter, in a post on March 6, the day of the premier:

The #HistoryOfTheWorldPart2 lineup is (fire emoji). New episodes every day through Thursday. Here’s what’s happening today.

For the Hulu series, Brooks gathered a cast that averaged a little older than the normal Hollywood blockbuster, with performers like Sid Caesar, Dom DeLuise, and Henny Youngman, with narration by Orson Welles.

Shecky Greene, Barry Levinson, and Brooks are the only remaining cast members from the original production. Greene, who played Marcus Vindictus in the film, was inducted into the Comedy Hall of Fame in 2020, but has not been on screen since 2000, with the exception of a few brief cameos in documentaries. Levinson, who had a cameo appearance in History of the World, Part I, is better recognised as a director rather than an actor or comedian. He has Hollywood classics such as Rain Man, Wag the Dog, and Good Morning, Vietnam in his directorial and production credits. He is now working on Dopesick for Hulu, as well as Francis and the Godfather for Paramount+.

Other films in which Brooks has worked on include comic classics such as Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein. Late in his career, his directorial debut, 1967’s The Producers, was transformed into a Broadway stage production that was a big success. Brooks then assisted in the adaptation of the stage performance into a feature picture directed by Susan Stroman.

The show premiered on March 6 and here’s how you can watch History of the World Part II on Hulu outside US.
