Hulu Announces Documentary Roster: ‘Queenmaker: The Making of An It Girl,’ ‘Freaknik’ and ‘Jewel Thief’

Amid all of the corporate turbulence at Disney and Hulu, the streaming platform continues to expand its collection of original documentaries with the addition of three new titles: “Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told”, “Queenmaker: The Making of An It Girl”, “The Jewel Thief”.

“Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told” is a series that, according to Hulu’s description “recounts the rise and fall of a small Atlanta HBCU picnic that exploded into an influential street party and spotlighted Atlanta as a major cultural stage”. The show delves into the party’s rise and fall, and the question of whether its magic can be revived four decades later.

Nikki Byles and Jay Allen are producers of the show. The executive producers of the series include showrunner Geraldine L. Porras and director P Frank Williams. Joining them are Jermaine Dupri, Luther Campbell, Peter Bittenbender, and Melissa Cooper, representing Mass Appeal, as well as Eric Tomosunas for Swirl Films and Terry Ross and Alex Avant.

“Queenmaker: The Making of an It Girl”, a new documentary from MRC, offers a fascinating look into the world of Manhattan’s elite and the now-defunct ‘Park Avenue Peerage’ blog that took the city by storm.

“In the height of heiress-era NYC, an anonymous blogger infiltrated Manhattan’s elite, bringing socialite celebrity to new heights,” the logline for the documentary says

Hulu adds in the description: “When the website’s creator was unmasked, the mastermind was not who anybody expected.”

The project is helmed by acclaimed director Zackary Drucker and features executive producer Scott Kaplan alongside CoverStory partner Emmet McDermott as the producer. Through interviews with insiders, experts, and those who were involved in the blog’s creation and exposure, the documentary promises to uncover the secrets and scandals of one of the most talked-about moments in New York’s social history.

“The Jewel Thief” promises to provide viewers with an incredible first-hand account of the notorious criminal mastermind, Gerald Blanchard. Blanchard’s story is one of the most captivating and intriguing criminal tales of modern times, showcasing his incredible creativity, cunning, and audacity.

“Two unlikely Winnipeg detectives track Blanchard across the globe as he perpetrates a series of increasingly elaborate heists in a quest for fame and notoriety through a life of crime,” says Hulu’s logline. Blanchard’s ultimate goal was to achieve fame and notoriety through a life of crime, and he spares no effort in pursuing this objective.

Produced by A Submarine Deluxe Production in association with Transient Pictures, “The Jewel Thief” is helmed by director Landon Van Soest. The documentary boasts an impressive lineup of executive producers, including Rick Brookwell and Ben Schwartz, while Josh Braun, Ben Braun, Dan Braun, and Van Soest serve as producers. With such a stellar team behind the project, viewers can expect a thrilling and captivating exploration of the life of one of the most infamous criminals in modern history.
