Australia is struggling to prepare for the T20 World Cup, with only nine players available for warm-up matches. The clash with the Indian Premier League (IPL) has caused several key players to be unavailable.

Many players are taking a short break at home after the IPL.

Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc, who played in the IPL final, have not yet rejoined the team. Captain Mitchell Marsh said,

“Guys have been at the IPL. They’ve been playing a lot of cricket, so we’ve prioritized giving them a few days at home.”

The team might have to use coaching staff to field during the warm-up matches. Brad Hodge, who is part of the support staff, and head coach Andrew McDonald could be called in.

Australia’s warm-up matches against Namibia and the West Indies will proceed with just nine players.

Marsh added, “We’ll get to our 15 eventually, but it’s essential that we give them a break.” The lack of key players could affect Australia’s performance in these important matches.

Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green are also absent due to their commitments with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. These players will join the team in Barbados before the first group match against Oman on June 5.

Australia’s Group B fixtures are set, starting with a match against Oman on June 6 at Kensington Oval, Barbados, at 10.30 am AEST. They will face England on June 9 at the same venue at 3 am AEST.

Their third match is against Namibia on June 12 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua, at 10.30 am AEST, and they will play Scotland on June 16 at Daren Sammy Stadium, St Lucia, at 10.30 am AEST.

The player shortage has raised worries about Australia’s readiness for the T20 World Cup.

David Warner, who is recovering from a hand injury, is also missing. Ricky Ponting said, “He’s a feisty little competitor that once the World Cup comes around, he hits the Australian colors back on again.”
