Neil Patrick Harris has returned to the role of Barney Stinson in the “How I Met Your Mother” spinoff, “How I Met Your Father.” The latest episodes which are currently available on Hulu, are being developed by the “This Is Us” co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger.
Harris portrayed Barney for nine seasons of HIMYM. In the previous seasons, he initially encountered Ted (played by Josh Radnor) in a pub and soon considered himself a part of the group. Barney, who was known for his promiscuous behavior, was the serial womanizer of the group and initially rejected any commitment. However, his tumultuous relationship with Robin (played by Cobie Smulders) eventually resulted in marriage, although they eventually divorced three years later.
According to an interview with TVLine with the show’s creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, Barney will return for additional episodes. The team affirms that Barney is not Sophie’s father but are being coy about what part he will play in the upcoming episodes.
Aptaker confirmed that, “We’re not telling a teen dad story. I think given Lori’s age, that’d become a pretty uncomfortable story. ” As a result of Barney’s divorce from Robin, the show’s creators hinted at how his return would deepen the plot of his current-day character.
He further stated, “Whenever we talk about bringing back a member of the original crew, you want it to serve two purposes. You want to give some tidbits about what is going on in their lives, where they’ve landed and where they’re at, but it’s also about how they impact the How I Met Your Father story, and how they send one of our characters in a new, unexpected direction. Similar to Robin last year, we’ll learn some more about where Barney’s at, but it’ll also have a major impact on the trajectory, and main narrative, of our season.”
“How I Met Your Father” is a new take on the classic sitcom and it features a brand-new cast of characters. The series focuses on a new group of friends in New York City and follows their romantic lives and adventures. The show is currently running with three episodes already aired.
