Fan-Favorite Sitcom ‘New Girl’ Ditches Netflix, Heads to Hulu and Peacock

Fan-Favorite Sitcom

In a major shift in the streaming world, popular sitcom “New Girl” is set to leave Netflix and head over to Hulu and Peacock for streaming. The show, which originally aired on Fox, had been a fan-favorite on Netflix for nearly 10 years. All seasons of the show will be available on both Hulu and Peacock, starting from April 17th. The news of the show leaving Netflix was shared via twitter.

Netflix acquired the streaming rights to “New Girl” in 2013, when the studios were thrilled to get a lucrative Netflix contract for their cable and broadcast shows. It joins other 20th Tv series like American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Pose, and Arrested Development as the most recent Disney-produced series to be shifted to Hulu after its license agreement with Netflix expired.

Disney, the parent company of “New Girl” producer 20th Television, has now become more accepting of non-exclusive rights and selling to outside parties, due to its recent shift in emphasis on profitability. While other considerations also contributed to the streaming agreement for Abbott Elementary, HBO Max and Hulu are now sharing prior seasons of that ABC smash comedy.

The comedy, which is set in Los Angeles, is about five young pals who “form a charmingly dysfunctional — or strangely functional — family,” according to the show’s synopsis. After a disastrous breakup, Jess Day (Deschanel) in “New Girl” needs a new place to reside. She discovers an ideal living space through an online search, and three single men she has never met before move in with her. The most realistic and pessimistic is Nick (Johnson), a former law student who is now a bartender. Schmidt (Greenfield) is a picky, hostile young professional who takes great pride in his abs. Winston (Morris) is a fiercely competitive former athlete who is unsure of his next move. Cece (Simone), a model with a lethal deadpan, who was Jess’s best friend since childhood, completes the group.

While the show originally broadcast on Fox from 2011 to 2018, it began to stream on Netflix in the US, back in 2013. Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone are among the cast members of the show.

Moreover, throughout the course of its seven seasons, “New Girl” included noteworthy guest stars such as Prince, Taylor Swift, Megan Fox, Damon Wayans Jr., Justin Long, Josh Gad, Michaela Watkins, Dermot Mulroney, Lizzy Caplan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rob Reiner, Linda Cardellini, Adam Brody, Brenda Song, and Carla Gugino. Elizabeth Meriwether was the show’s creator, and she served as one of the executive producers alongside Brett Baer, David Finkel, Jake Kasdan, Erin O’Malley, Peter Chernin, and Katherine Pope.

Chernin Entertainment collaborated with 20th Television to make “New Girl” while Disney Entertainment was in charge of distributing the show.

“New Girl” got numerous Emmy and Golden Globe nominations during its initial broadcast run, and Deschanel earned a Critics’ Choice Television Award for actress in a comedy series.
