‘Sam: A Saxon’ – The Gritty and Haunting True Tale Premieres on Hulu

Hulu recently unveiled the new trailer for its upcoming German drama series, ‘Sam: A Saxon. Set amidst the turbulent political landscape, the show is based on the true story of the first Black policeman in East Germany, Samuel Meffire, who attempts to find a home.

Created by Jörg Winger, the mastermind/co creator behind the Deutschland83/86/89 trilogy, Hulu’s ‘Sam: A Saxon’ will continue to explore the lives of those affected by the East and West Germany divide during the Cold War era. With its captivating portrayal of this uniquely challenging time, the series is set to premiere on Hulu on April 26.

The newly released trailer offers a captivating preview of Sam’s remarkable ascent and eventual descent. Malick Bauer, known for Wir (2021), Tatort (1970), delivers a standout performance as the titular Sam, showcasing his character’s beginnings amid the often brutal discrimination in East Germany, as well as his progression within the police force.

Moving forward, as Sam races to see his girlfriend, who is at that moment in labor with his child, he is noticed and commended by the police for his speed. Recognizing his potential, they soon recruit him into their ranks. However, the trailer also reveals that Sam’s life will not continue on a constant upward trajectory. Despite his skills and utmost dedication to his work, Sam continues to be dogged by the pervasive racism in the very country he calls home.

Throughout the mini TV series, ‘Sam: A Saxon,’ Sam relentlessly battles against the prevailing system of racism. In doing so, he emerges as the embodiment of an anti-racism movement and a beacon of hope for a renewed German identity. Nonetheless, his ascent to prominence is suddenly overshadowed by a dramatic fall from grace, as the once-celebrated Samuel finds himself incarcerated and branded as Germany’s “public enemy #1.”

Helmed by showrunner Jörg Winger, the series boasts executive producers Tyron Ricketts for Panthertainment, Sebastian Werninger for Big Window Productions, and Leslie-Alina Schäfer. Naomi Marne (Deutschland 83/86/89) serves as the producer, while the series is the creative brainchild of Ricketts, Jörg Winger, and Christoph Silber.

Boasting a stellar lineup of talent, the cast of ‘Sam – A Saxon’ includes Svenja Jung (Deutschland 89), Ivy Quainoo (John Wick: Chapter 4), Carina Wiese (Deutschland 89), Luise von Finckh (Vienna Blood), Martin Brambach (Tatort), Thorsten Merten (Babylon Berlin), and Tyron Ricketts (Dogs of Berlin).
