Squid Game Marked History by Winning Major SAG Awards Acting Prizes

After Netflix’s Squid Game made history as the first Korean series to win SAG Awards for Drama Actor (Lee Jung-Jae) and Actress (Jung Ho-Yeon), as well as TV stunts, Lee spoke backstage about how the show’s success could benefit Korean film and television in general.

“I think it’s just the beginning. There [is] a lot of amazing Korean content that’s just as entertaining and touching as Squid Game,” he said via an interpreter, “so I ask that you look out for [it], show us a lot of love and continue to watch a lot of great Korean content.”

 

The Korean survival thriller bagged four nominations of SAG awards that include:

  • Outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble in a drama series.
  • Outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble in a comedy or drama television series
  • Outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series for star Lee Jung-jae.
  • Outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for star Jung Ho-yeon.

In their respective categories, Lee, 49, and Jung, 27, won the SAG awards. Fans watching the SAG Awards from all across the world saw Lee and Jung, two non-English actors, receive SAG Award nominations and triumphs for the first time.

Lee was up against Billy Crudup of The Morning Show and Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin of Succession for the Drama Series Actor award.

On the other hand, Jung was competing against the enormous names of Jennifer Aniston & Reese Witherspoon of The Morning Show, The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Elisabeth Moss, and Succession’s star Sarah Snook.

The show also won the award for finest action performance by a stunt ensemble in a television series, which was given out on the PEOPLE & Entertainment Weekly Red Carpet by stars Alexandra Daddario and Ross Butler. Overall, the show won three of the four statuettes it was nominated for.
