“The Great” is a historical dramedy that tells the story of Catherine, a young woman who marries the Russian emperor, Peter. In the show’s second season, Catherine successfully takes over Russia with the help of Velementov, Orlo, and Marial. However, she faces challenges from all sides, especially from the group of nobles who are loyal to Peter. As Catherine begins to settle into her role as empress, she realizes how little she understands Russia, but remains determined to create a more progressive future for the country. She also has a baby and learns that Peter was responsible for her mother’s death, reigniting her disgust towards him. In the second season’s finale, Catherine forgives Peter to prevent another battle between them, but Velementov arrests the nobles who were planning a coup. Catherine attempts to assassinate Peter, but instead attacks his “body double (who lived)”, and the two reach a silent agreement.

Season three of the show brings back the on-screen duo of Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. The season delves into the couple’s attempt to repair their marriage after some major obstacles. Peter had survived Catherine’s attempt to murder him, and Catherine had imprisoned all of his friends. Additionally, Peter feels lost as the first husband to Catherine’s reign and seeks fulfillment in activities such as hunting, fathering, and culinary experiments. However, the visions of his late father, played by Jason Isaacs, haunt him, and he feels like a failure as Peter the Great’s son. Meanwhile, Catherine aims to establish a name for herself beyond Russia’s borders and is inspired by the US ambassador to organize a conference where peasants, nobles, and merchants can share their opinions on developing a new Russia. She soon “learns that even the best political leaders sometimes need to make compromises in order to progress.”

As for Season 3, fans can expect more drama and humor as Catherine tries to maintain her grip on the throne amidst new challenges and enemies. The show’s cast, including Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Sacha Dhawan, and Charity Wakefield, is expected to return for the upcoming season. Gwilym Lee, Adam Godley, Belinda Bromilow, Bayo Gbadamosi, Florence Keith-Roach, and Danusia Samal, are also amongst the show’s cast.
