Critically Acclaimed Film ‘Triangle of Sadness’ to Join Criterion Collection in April

Critically Acclaimed Film

As the curtains draw to a close on an incredibly successful awards season, “Triangle of Sadness” emerges as one of the many exceptional films to be welcomed into the Criterion Collection this month.

Brimming with raw emotion and a profound sense of humanity, the globally acknowledged film, “Triangle of Sadness” has captured the hearts of both critics and audiences alike, leaving a lasting impact on all who have experienced its unflinching portrayal of the human condition.

As Victoria Buchanan, Cultural and Societal Trends Director of Nike, shared her feedback on Twitter:

Directed by Ruben Östlund, Swedish filmmaker best known for his black comedic and satirical films, ‘Triangle of Sadness’ takes audiences on a darkly comedic and thought-provoking journey with his latest film, which chronicles the misadventures of two supermodels aboard a luxury cruise that ultimately leads them to a deserted island, along with a few other passengers and a Marxist captain.

Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, the film went on to receive accolades for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay at the 2023 Oscars.

Brooks Otterlake, a film fanatic, took to Twitter to express his appreciation about the film:

Östlund’s signature blend of satire and social commentary is on full display in this film, offering a unique and insightful perspective on contemporary society and its values. As Variety film critic Peter DeBruge wrote in his review, “The thing about Östlund is that he makes you laugh, but he also makes you think. There’s a meticulous precision to the way he constructs, blocks and executes scenes — a kind of agonizing unease, amplified by awkward silences or an unwelcome fly buzzing between characters struggling to communicate.”

‘Triangle of Sadness’ can be streamed on Hulu, but the Criterion version provides a director-approved 4K digital master of the film along with supplementary videos. The additional content consists of special featurettes, including an interview with Östlund and filmmaker/actor Johan Jonason, as well as two documentaries showcasing the film’s special effects and the most difficult day on set.

In case you live outside the USA and are interested in watching the movie, here’s how you can watch Triangle of Sadness on Hulu outside USA. From classic comedies to modern-day favorites, Hulu offers a diverse range of best comedy movies that are sure to tickle your funny bone.

This month, The Criterion Collection is also adding Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe,” a collection of five films: “Lovers Rock,” “Red, White and Blue,” “Mangrove,” “Education,” and “Alex Wheatle,” which premiered on BBC One in 2020. The movies delve into the unique experiences of West Indian immigrants living in London, United Kingdom, during the 1960s to ’80s.

Although the five films are accessible on Prime Video, the newly remastered version features exclusive conversations between Steeve McQueen and Professor Paul Gilroy, a documentary that explores the 1981 New Cross house fire, audio discussions with McQueen, Dennis Bovell, and Mike D of the Beastie Boys, and an essay by Ashley Clark, a broadcast journalist, film programmer, and critic.

The addition of Triangle of Sadness to The Criterion Collection is an exciting development for film enthusiasts. With its sense of empty affluence, the film is sure to captivate audiences. Fans can now enjoy the remastered version, complete with exclusive content, when it is released this April.
