The Actress Behind Princess Margaret Speaks out: Time to End ‘The Crown’

Helena Carter

It’s been a long and royal journey, but it may finally be time to say goodbye to the beloved Netflix series “The Crown.” Helena Bonham Carter, the actress behind Princess Margaret, has spoken out about the show’s future, saying she thinks it’s time for it to end.

The former cast member of the Netflix program acknowledged that the show is “very different now” as it moves closer and closer to the present day. The darker aspects of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage have already been hinted at in Season 5. Following the release of Prince Harry’s tell-all book “Spare,” Carter questioned whether or not the series would continue after that.

“I don’t really want to contribute to the whole thing,” Carter told in response to Harry’s book. “It’s complicated, and it’ll get taken out of context. And I think it’s been given enough attention.”  The actress Helena Bonham Carter, who appeared in “The Crown” and portrayed Prince Harry’s great-aunt Princess Margaret, said about the series, “I should be careful here too, but I don’t think they should carry on, actually. I’m in it and I loved my episodes, but it’s very different now. When ‘The Crown’ started it was a historic drama, and now it’s crashed into the present. But that’s up to them.”

Even though she has never been on the show, Judi Dench has criticized the most recent season as being “cruelly unjust to the individuals and damaging” to the royal family. “No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I,” Dench said, “but this cannot go unchallenged.”

Dench added, “Despite this week stating publicly that ‘The Crown’ has always been a ‘fictionalized drama,’ the program makers have resisted all calls for them to carry a disclaimer at the start of each episode. The time has come for Netflix to reconsider — for the sake of a family and a nation so recently bereaved, as a mark of respect to a sovereign who served her people so dutifully for 70 years, and to preserve its reputation in the eyes of its British subscribers.”

The show’s plot is also moving towards more current history, making it harder to follow royal events. Fans may find the programme less factual and engaging with each subsequent season. Since 2016, the programme has been a success, with each season covering a decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s life. The programme has chronicled the monarchy’s ups and downs from her childhood until her Golden Jubilee. Given the show’s and cast’s success, Helena Bonham Carter’s comment surprised many fans. Her viewpoint is justified.

It is becoming more difficult to keep up with the real-life events of the monarchy as the show’s plot begins to travel into more recent history. The show could grow less factually correct and less engaging with each successive season, making it more difficult for people to appreciate the show. Despite the challenges, many fans still hope the show will continue, especially with the recently announced plans for a sixth season.

Regardless of what happens, “The Crown” will always be remembered as one of the best shows in the recent history of Netflix. With its stunning performances and attention to detail, the show has captured the hearts of millions of viewers and cemented its place in the annals of television history.

“Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatization tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign.” The final two seasons of “The Crown” span the 1990s through 2003, with Season 6 including Princess Diana’s death, which Netflix has stated will not be shown on screen. The lives and times of Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family were shown in this show so incredibly engaging that it would live on in people’s memories forever.
