Boston Strangler Trailer released by Hulu: A True Crime Thriller

The official trailer for the true crime thriller Boston Strangler, starring Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon, has been released. The film attempts to uncover the truth behind one of America’s most notorious serial killers. The crimes committed by the killer are infamous, but the details behind the crimes are not as well-known.

While the movie is set to debut on March 17th, the Boston Strangler trailer has been made available by Hulu in advance. In the movie, Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon play two intrepid reporters who assisted in the pursuit of the film’s murderer during a frightening crime wave in the 1960s. They bring new attention to the case and reveal disturbing information about the crimes.

Boston Strangler is based on the true story of the notorious serial killer who pursued and murdered numerous women in Boston between 1962 and 1964. Although 11 people were ultimately confirmed as having died, it was thought that there were more.

The movie’s plot centers on Knightley’s character Loretta McLaughlin, a Massachusetts-based reporter for the Record-American newspaper. McLaughlin was the first journalist to be able to put together the pieces that would eventually link the murders as a part of a wave of serial violence. To pursue her investigations, she partnered with Jean Cole (Coon), a close friend and coworker, but she still had to fight off the oppressive sexism and misogyny that tragically prevailed at the time. Nonetheless, McLaughlin and Cole heroically continue to investigate the case at great personal peril, risking their own lives in the process.

As a native of Boston who grew up knowing the tale of the “Strangler,” Matt Ruskin previously expressed his intention to direct the movie.

He shared, “Having grown up in Boston, I had always heard of the Strangler in a very abstract sense, but I didn’t really know anything about the details of the case and a few years ago, I started reading about it and discovered a really fascinating, layered serial killer story. I always loved journalism stories and in researching the case, I discovered these two journalists, starting with Loretta McLaughlin, the first journalist to connect the murders, and in her reporting, she actually gave the Boston Strangler his name. It was a really monumental story for her in her career in the early 1960s. She was a very ambitious reporter in a male-dominated field and this was a real turning point for her.”
