Curtain Call: Season 10 of ABC’s ‘The Goldbergs’ to Be the Last

Curtain call: Season 10 of ABC

ABC has announced that it is bidding farewell to The Goldbergs after season 10. The Disney-owned broadcast network’s longest-running scripted comedy series will conclude when its current season ends on May 3. It has been confirmed that calls were made Thursday afternoon to inform the show’s stars and creatives. Here’s how you can watch The Goldbergs Season 10 outside the USA.

The Goldbergs was created by Adam F. Goldberg and was seen as a passion project for the geeky writer. The comedy recounts the trials, ups and downs, twists and turns in the life of the crazy but loving titular Jewish family during the 1980s Reagan period. The chaos is wilder than ever in Season 10 with everyone living under the same roof again and Beverly (McLendon-Covey) adjusting to her new role as a grandmother.

The Goldbergs, which is narrated by Sam Lerner and Patton Oswalt, has been an ABC fixture for the past decade, serving as the network’s comedic constant under executive regimes that have included Paul Lee, Channing Dungey, Karey Burke, and Craig Erwich. Sony Pictures Television produces the show, which has survived the exits of actor Jeff Garlin due to several HR accusations.

Even though The Goldbergs has been a consistent performer for ABC in terms of ratings, performing well on both the Tuesday 9 p.m. slot and on ABC’s hallmark Wednesday 8 p.m. comedy block, where it has remained ever since the cancellation, can hardly come as a surprise.

The lack of ownership by ABC over the sitcom, along with dropping linear ratings and high licensing fees for an older series, made an 11th season increasingly implausible. Given the state of the broadcast industry, it can be expected that not many more series will be joining the elite club of live-action broadcast comedies with double-digit seasons, and 200+ episode runs.

The other major factor for the cancellation lies in the fact that with Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary, which is now a smash with the audiences, on-air ABC no longer needs The Goldbergs as Disney turn to fresher and more optimistic originals in accordance with its newly minted awards juggernaut.

Moreover, show creator Goldberg left the series a few years ago after leaving his long-running overall agreement at Sony Pictures Television for a substantial deal with Disney, where he is working on a fresh take on The Muppets. With Goldberg and his home films no longer available, the program has struggled to create new storylines that touch home in the same way that its creator’s adolescence did.

ABC negotiated new contracts with The Goldbergs star/EP Wendi McLendon-Covey, as well as original cast members Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, and Hayley Orrantia, a year ago, allowing the network to bring the comedy back for Season 10 and give it a proper ending after a trying 2021, which saw it lose two core cast members: George Segal, who died in March of complications from bypass surgery, and Garlin.

“We are so proud of the 10 years we were able to spend with The Goldbergs,” said Craig Erwich, president, ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals: “This is an incredible team and we’re so thankful for the joy and entertainment they brought to so many over this time. We look forward to celebrating their final chapter along with the fans in the weeks ahead.”

Sony Pictures Television, collaborates with Happy Madison and Doug Robinson Productions to create The Goldbergs. Executive producers include Doug Robinson, Alex Barnow, Chris Bishop, Annette Davis, Mike Sikowitz, David Guarascio, and McLendon-Covey. From Season 7, Barnow and Bishop have served as showrunners, following creator Goldberg.

“It’s been an honor to be part of The Goldbergs for the last decade. I’m really proud of what we accomplished with the show, and I’m so lucky to have had such a rewarding experience. I will miss my TV family and every last crew member,” said McLendon-Covey. “Thanks to our brilliant writers for giving us thoughtful story arcs year after year, and for being so collaborative. Thanks to the best EPs in the business. And thanks to all our fans (the Goldnerds) for being so sweet and supportive. My heart is full…But I definitely hope I never see another pair of shoulder pads for the rest of my life.”

At this point, only ABC’s popular sophomore comedy series Abbott Elementary has been renewed for a second season. Grey’s Anatomy-Station 19, The Rookie-The Rookie: Feds franchises, as well as The Good Doctor and, presumably, its legal offshoot The Good Lawyer, are all expected to be picked up.

Full episodes of The Goldbergs seasons 1-9 are accessible on Hulu.
