Hulu’s Future Uncertain as Disney CEO Bob Iger Weighs Sale Options

The streaming wars have been heating up in recent years, with new players entering the market and established players expanding their offerings. In this crowded landscape, one of the biggest players, Hulu, has been a subject of speculation regarding its future. CNBC reports that Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger is willing to sell Hulu.

There’s talk of a sale in the executive’s new plan to improve the company’s financial status. Iger, who succeeded Bob Chapek as CEO last year, has been working hard to restore Disney’s fortunes after the pandemic’s widespread impact on the entertainment business. The CEO has outlined a plan that includes producing new installments in the Toy Story, Zootopia, and Frozen franchises.

The Chief Executive Officer of Disney, Bob Iger, said today that he is open to selling Hulu instead of spending billions of dollars to buy out Comcast’s interest in the streaming platform. When asked by CNBC about his intentions for Hulu as the 2024 deadline to either buy it in or sell it off approaches, he said that he does not currently have any plans for either option.

He stated, “Everything is on the table right now, so I am not going to speculate whether we are a buyer or a seller of it. But I have suggested that I’m concerned about undifferentiated general entertainment, particularly in the competitive landscape we are operating in. We are going to look at it objectively and expansively.”

After seeing a drop in members to Disney+ for the first time since it launched during the most recent fiscal quarter, Disney needs a new streaming strategy. Since its release in November 2019, the platform that powers shows like Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel has effectively used the company’s well-known trademarks and properties. The third season of The Mandalorian is set to debut on March 1, and whether or not it’s enough time to gain new subscribers is an open question. In addition to Hulu and ESPN+, the platform serves as Disney’s streaming portfolio’s centerpiece.

Hulu, which is currently only accessible inside the United States, has quickly become the streaming platform of choice for a sizable portion of binge-watching audiences. In May 2019, Comcast and Disney signed a deal that handed Disney ownership of Hulu. Beginning in January 2024, Comcast will have the option to sell Disney its ownership stake, and Disney will have the option to force the sale.

Host David Faber pressed Iger on whether or not he would be interested in a buyout offer from Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, and Iger said,  “We will be open-minded.”  According to Faber, everyone has assumed that Disney would purchase the whole of Hulu. “And I think I am suggesting that that is not necessarily the case,” Iger said.

After Disney’s results for the quarter ending in December 2022 were above Wall Street’s forecasts, Iger commented about Hulu. As part of a plan to cut costs by $5.5 billion, Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced the removal of 7,000 jobs and the division of the company into three distinct divisions, each headed by an executive: Disney Entertainment, under co-chairs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman; ESPN, under Jimmy Pitaro; and Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, under Josh D’Amaro.
