Actor Neil Patrick Harris is set to reprise his popular How I Met Your Mother character Barney Stinson in the upcoming mid-season finale of the Hulu original spinoff series, How I Met Your Father Season 2.
Harris first surprised fans when he returned as Barney in the Season 2 premiere of How I Met Your Father. In the final moments of the first episode, titled ‘Cool and Chill,’ the timeline jumps forward a year, and Sophie, played by Hilary Duff, leaves a hysterical voicemail for her mother saying that she thinks she is dating her father before suddenly crashing into a luxury SUV. When the driver’s side door opens, the victim is revealed to be Barney. He shrugs and tells Sophie, “Dude!” just as the bumper falls off the Audi onto the sidewalk. When Sophie of the future, played by Kim Cattrall, is asked by her son who that guy is, she replies, “We’ll get there soon enough.”
Fans of the original CBS comedy series How I Met Your Mother are excited to see Harris back in action as Barney, the serial womanizer of the group who rejected commitment but eventually ended up marrying Robin, played by Cobie Smulders. Harris was a main cast member on the show for nine seasons and received four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.
How I Met Your Father centers on Sophie’s story of how she met the father of her child, with the show featuring a framing device that includes a future version of Sophie in the year 2045 recounting her life story to friends.
The show also stars Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, and Suraj Sharma, along with recurring stars Cattrall, Daniel Augustin, Ashley Reyes, and Josh Peck. The series comes from 20th Television, with Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berg serving as creators and executive producers alongside Carter Bays, Craig Thomas, Pamela Fryman, Adam Londy, and Suzy Mamann Greenberg. Duff also serves as a producer on the show.
