Kid Cudi on Wearing Floral Dress “I don’t give a f— about what anyone thinks”

Kid Cudi stunned everyone as he wore a spaghetti strap, floral print costume on Saturday Night Live in April that was a completely inspired from Curt Cobain’s floral dress.

The late Nirvana lead singer famously donned a floral skirt in 1993 on the covering of The Face magazine. Which was sufficient enough to inspire the Grammy Award-winning rapper’s outfit for the SNL performance of his “Sad People” song.

As per Kid Cudi, Cobain’s picture in this costume was quite rock’ n’ roll to him, Cudi stated on the most recent episode of HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted. He felt it was extremely cool. So he created his mind years ago that he too would want to do something like this. Moreover, Cudi feels that this particular action would provide confidence to children, encourage them to be themselves and do what they want to accomplish.

Unsurprisingly, Cudi was criticized by several netizens for his outfit choice in wake of his appearance on SNL. Though he is unbothered by the negative feedback and said it was more like a question of why people would act that way?

Cudi’s floral dress was designed by Off-White’s Virgil Abloh. After the performance in April, Cudi thanked designer Abloh on Twitter, stating:

Virgil designed the dress for me. I told him I wanted to show love to Kurt with a floral print sundress and this man-made a masterpiece. Thank You @virgilabloh you’re a f*ckin genius!! Love you man we did it!!!

Cudi told that’s he’s never been the type of person who would care about backlash, he stated that he’s not bothered at all by the people criticizing and he doesn’t really care about what people think. He knew this choice of dress would bring in negative attention.

Instead of being defensive or angry, he just simply laughed it off saying:

I’ve already seen people making YouTube videos where they’re just strictly talking about me and this dress.

He further added,

Like grown men, angry, grown Black men, angry. ‘He’s doing something against men and masculinity, it’s a big thing going on…’ And I just be like, ‘Yo, this is so funny, this is crazy that I’ve stirred it up like this.

Earlier in the show, while performing his song “Tequila Shots”, Cudi had worn a green cardigan which was similar to what Cobain wore in Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged concert, to honour the late SNL comedian Chris Farley who passed away in 1997.

However, the cardigan did not catch as much attention as his floral dress, but Cudi says he did not care at all about the controversy surrounding his choice of clothes for the performance.

He also stated that, even though Kanye West has not talked to him about his choice of outfit, Cudi said he knew “he respects me for it”.

Earlier this month, Cudi spoke out about psychological health. He stated in an Instagram post,

Sadness eats away at me sometimes. How do I deal? A lot of individuals strike me as well to ask just how I get through. Truthfully, idk. Some days are excellent, others not so good. I only try to think God has one thing much better for me.
