Hulu’s Latest Series ‘Am I Being Unreasonable?’ Is a Must-Watch For Fans of Comedy And Mystery

Hulu

Hulu and BBC’s newest series, Am I Being Unreasonable? explores the aftermath of revealing your deepest, darkest secret to a new friend.

The show sees British comedian Daisy May Cooper as Nic, a wife, and mother trapped in an unhappy marriage while also grieving the loss of her one true love. Nic feels isolated as she can’t share her grief with anyone around her. However, things change when Selin Hizli‘s character, Jen, arrives in town as a new mom.

Nic and Jen hit it off, and during a night of heavy drinking, Nic confides her secret to Jen. As the show progresses, we discover that Nic isn’t the only one keeping secrets, as those closest to her also have something to hide.

The idea for the story, written by stars Cooper and Hizli, came from the two friends’ mutual dislike of a person in their friend circle.

“Daisy and I have known each other for a long time but we got back in touch with each other during the 2020 lockdown when we were all stuck at home,” Hizli said while discussing the project on the show “On The Red Carpet.”

She added: “We started talking about some of our experiences.”

“We’ve been friends, but we really came together when we both admitted that we didn’t like somebody that was in our friendship group,” Cooper chimed in, admitting that her own life dramas have helped her write the show.

“You see somebody dealing with grief… somebody well not dealing with grief actually. And having somebody who’s trying to help with that grief by literally enabling Nic because Nic is a narcissist and that’s all she wants is to be enabled,” Cooper said.

“That was my life at that moment. My life is sort of falling apart anyway so it was quite easy to sort of channel it!” the actor added.

Hizli then said that, at the core of it, the story is about female friendship and kinship. She then complemented Cooper by saying:

“I think that Daisy is one of the most incredible actors that I’ve ever seen, not just because of her comedic performance but because she is brilliant at conveying emotions as well.”

The show, which has already been renewed for a second season, has been well-received by viewers and critics alike. Fans of the new show have taken to Twitter to admire it, with one person admiring its emotional sensibilities:

Another person is enjoying the laughs as they come:

Am I Being Unreasonable? is captivating and keeps you guessing. However, some critics believe the show’s attempts at being structurally ambitious undermine its emotional core. The story revolves around two friends bonded by trauma but often feels like too much of a guessing game.

Other than the two main characters’ comic timing and the actors’ on-screen talent, critics are loving the fact that the first season is only six episodes long with each installment having just a 30-minute runtime.

It’s unclear if the second season of the show will continue to have a structure as unpredictable as the first season. Maybe, spending more time with the characters and their development will allow for more character-driven performances next time around. However, the show’s trickery may be what makes it unique.

“Am I Being Unreasonable?” is now available to stream and here’s how you can watch it on Hulu outside US.
