Ryan Coogler Pondering The X-Files Reboot, Says Show Creator Chris Carter

Ryan Coogler Pondering X-Files Reboot, Says Show Creator Chris Carter

The X-Files, a popular sci-fi drama from the 90s, might be making a comeback with Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther and Creed, at the helm of a new reboot. According to Chris Carter, the show’s original creator, Coogler plans to “remount The X-Files with a diverse cast.”

During a recent interview on the CBC radio show On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko about the forthcoming 30th-anniversary premiere of The X-Files on Fox, Carter made the exciting revelation for fans but did not provide further details. He did, however, mention that Coogler has “got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”

Carter pointed out that a modern version of the show would require significant changes. “We’re so steeped in conspiracies now,” he said. “The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think it would be a different show.”

On the other hand, representatives for Ryan Coogler did not provide any comments in response to requests about the rumored X-Files reboot. Similarly, X-Files producer 20th Television declined to make any comments on the matter.

Although it’s unclear if the project is really happening and what form it will take or on which platform it will air, it’s more likely to appear on Hulu rather than Fox, the original network home of The X-Files. However, following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, Fox, and 20th TV are no longer part of the same company.

On the other hand, reboots of Fox shows Futurama and King of the Hill are currently set up at Hulu giving more weight to the thought that the X-Files reboot may also find a home on the streaming platform.

The X-Files had an original nine-season run from 1993 to 2002 and two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018, totaling 11 seasons. Carter also wrote and produced two films, The X-Files: Fight the Future in 1998 and The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008, and created a short-lived spinoff for the show titled The Lone Gunmen.

In 2020, Fox announced the production of an animated comedy based on the series, centering on a B-team of agents operating in New Mexico, but the project never launched and is now no longer active. After the last season of The X-Files aired in 2018, the show’s studio, 20th TV, has switched from Fox to Disney, where Coogler’s Proximity Media has a five-year overall TV agreement.

The original TV show revolved around FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who were tasked with investigating cases that were seemingly unsolvable by conventional means. Mulder was shown to be a believer in the paranormal. At the same time, Scully was a skeptic, and the two often clashed as they investigated cases involving aliens, mutants, government conspiracies, and other unexplained phenomena.

Throughout the series, Mulder and Scully worked to uncover a vast government conspiracy involving extraterrestrial life and their own agency’s involvement in covering it up. Along the way, they encounter a number of memorable characters, both friends and foes and face numerous challenges and obstacles that put their lives and their relationship to the test.

The show’s unique blend of sci-fi, horror, and suspense, along with its well-drawn characters and intricate plot lines, made it a cultural phenomenon and a defining show of the 1990s.

Coogler’s most recent film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was released in November 2022. He is also set to executive produce Marvel’s Ironheart series and is developing a new untitled series set in Wakanda for Disney Plus. Coogler also produced Creed III, directed by Michael B. Jordan.

Even though it has been years since the series first aired, The X-Files continues to be a favorite among fans of science fiction and mystery, and its impact can be seen in countless TV shows and movies that followed in its wake. With Coogler’s impressive track record and vision for a more diverse cast, fans eagerly await more details about The X-Files reboot. However, since the X-Files reboot may not be out for a while, here’s how fans can watch other sci-fi series and movies on Hulu outside US.
