Nicholas Hoult Explains Why He Dropped Out of “Mission: Impossible” for Hulu’s “The Great”

Nicholas Hoult explains why he dropped out of "Mission: Impossible" for Hulu

Nicholas Hoult had to abandon his role as the primary antagonist in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” in January 2020 to conclude filming for the third season of Hulu’s “The Great.”

Hoult portrays Russian Emperor Peter III, opposite Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great, in The Great. Their performances in the show’s second season earned both actors Emmy nominations. The series’ third season is set to debut on May 12, 2023, two years after the preceding season aired on Hulu. Here’s how you could watch The Great on Hulu, outside the US.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Nicholas Hoult revealed that he had to drop out of “Mission: Impossible 7” due to scheduling conflicts. The makers of the blockbuster franchise chose Esai Morales to take over and star alongside Tom Cruise.

Director Christopher McQuarrie had teased Hoult’s involvement in the film back in 2020, writing, “care to raise a little hell?” on Instagram, to which Hoult responded, “Though why stop at a little?”

However, his commitment to “The Great” made it impossible for him to participate in the Mission: Impossible film. You can enjoy all Mission Impossible Movies before the release of the latest one.

Moreover, Hoult auditioned for lead roles in “The Batman” and “Top Gun: Maverick” before landing the role in “Mission: Impossible.” However, he had to give up both roles due to his prior commitment to “The Great. Robert Pattinson and Miles Teller were ultimately chosen for “The Batman” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” respectively.

He recounted, “I screen-tested for ‘The Batman’ and didn’t get it. Screen-tested for ‘Top Gun,’ didn’t get it,” Hoult told The Guardian. “Then I got the call from Tom Cruise, ‘Hey, how about “Mission: Impossible”?’ OK. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of ‘The Great.’”

Instead, Hoult secured a role in Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” and “Renfield,” where he stars alongside Nicolas Cage. He described “Renfield” as a combination of “almost ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ meets ‘Notting Hill,’ with a sprinkling of ‘John Wick.'”

In “Nosferatu”, Hoult will be seen alongside Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Despite both films being vampire-related, Hoult stated that “Nosferatu” is vastly different from “Renfield.” He mentioned that the film “could not be further removed from ‘Renfield’ if it tried.”

Hoult commended Cage for being a positive influence on the set, and he’s thrilled to work with him again. He recounted his experience that he was “Intimidated by it, but also made to feel very calm and safe with Nick. Side note, I also got to eat my first ever corndog in his presence. It was in a scene, which was obviously a big moment that stuck with me. But then yeah, to get to work with him again, as an adult, I get to appreciate much more of his work.”

Furthermore, Hoult is also set to star in “Juror No. 2” alongside Toni Collette in one of Clint Eastwood’s final directorial projects. The movie follows a murder trial and centers around a juror (Hoult) who has to decide between manipulating the jury to save himself or revealing the truth and turning himself in. Collette will portray the prosecutor.
