Rick and Morty Co-Creator Justin Roiland

In a recent development, the domestic violence charges against Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the hit animated series ‘Rick and Morty’, have been dismissed by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. To which Roiland insists that it was based “solely on the word of an embittered ex” and that he is “deeply shaken by the horrible lies”.

A spokesperson for O.C. D.A. Todd Spitzer said that, “We dismissed the charges today as a result of having insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt”.

Roiland, who had vehemently denied the allegations, has since taken to social media to proclaim his innocence. He said in a tweet entitled “justice”.

In a case that came to light in late January, Roiland, 43, was charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit. The alleged attack against an individual occurred in or around January 2020, according to law enforcement.

Roiland, who pleaded not guilty, was arrested and bailed on a $50,000 (£41,000) bond in August 2020. A few months later, he was also subject to a protective order that required him to keep at least 100 feet away from the person he was accused of assaulting. Additionally, he was not to have any contact or harass said unnamed individual. The protection order, which was meant to last three years and whose pre-trial hearing is scheduled for next month, was supposed to end in October 2023.

Roiland’s attorneys said in a statement at the time: “We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”

His attorney, T Edward Welbourn, also stated: “To be clear, not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the district attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence.”
