Quasi Comes with a Satirical Take on The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Quasi Trailer Offers a Satirical Take on The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Broken Lizard comedy group is back with a time-based satire set in medieval France, following in the footsteps of Mel Brooks and Monty Python.  Quasi has officially released its trailer. The group, which has previously performed in shows like Super Troopers, Beerfest, and The Slammin’ Salmon, now presents a satirical interpretation of the well-known tale of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The film’s irreverent comedy and eccentric characters are showcased in the trailer.

The comedy will be the group’s first collaborative effort since Super Troopers 2 in 2018 and is the latest offering from Broken Lizard. In 2021, it was stated that they will parody The Hunchback of Notre Dame in their upcoming period comedy Quasi, however little was known about the film at the time. The movie by Searchlight Pictures will now be available to stream starting on April 20, 2023.

The official synopsis says, “A hapless hunchback yearns for love, but finds himself in the middle of a murderous feud between the Pope and the king of France when each orders the hunchback to kill the other.” And you can get a sneak preview by viewing the brand-new trailer below.

Hulu recently released History of the World Part II, a follow-up to Mel Brooks’ 1981 comedy History of the World Part I. Many of the jokes in the trailer will undoubtedly be compared to classics like Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Here’s how you can watch the movie Quasi on Hulu, if you reside outside of the US.

During a Super Troopers reunion at the Vulture Festival in 2022, the director, Kevin Heffernan, discussed making this movie and discussed the influence and inspiration of Monty Python. “We got to wear stupid wigs and do bad accents and do a Monty Python kind of thing.” Heffernan also discussed the origins of this project, saying, “While we were working on Super Troopers 3 with Searchlight, we said, ‘We have this other movie that we like,’ and we gave them the script and they really loved it. We said, ‘We have this little window, we’d love to shoot it.’ And so we did — we went and shot medieval France right up in Santa Clarita.”

The movie will be released before Disney tries their hand at a live-action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, though their version will particularly recreate their animated version of the narrative that was published in 1996. The movie, Hunchback, is slated to be released in 2024 which was first announced in 2019.
