In the near future, after a break of nine years and counting, in Sherlock Holmes 3, Robert Downey Jr. is scheduled to reprise his role as the Great Detective, and it’s likely he’ll be teaming up with Johnny Depp while doing it according to Bounding Into Comics.
It is confirmed that in an undisclosed role, Downey Jr. brought his old friend Depp on board the Warner Bros. project. The National Enquirer claims to have learned from a source close to the production that RDJ offered Depp a role in the next Sherlock Holmes film, feeling sorry for the Pirates of the Caribbean star given the very tough public time he is having right now. Johnny and Robert have a very unique 30-year friendship that goes back to each of their days as quirky Hollywood hell-raisers,” as the Enquirer’s source colorfully puts it.”
The publication goes on to say that Downey Jr. relates to what Depp is going through after the Iron Man actor infamously had his own public image bruised during his low point in the late 90s with Depp’s reputation having been seriously damaged late due to the accusations of domestic violence made against him by ex-wife Amber Heard. The Enquirer’s source adds, “Robert thinks Johnny deserves the same opportunity to redeem himself that he had.”
It’s best, of course to take this tabloid rumor with a massive pile of salt, but who knows, is there anything to it maybe? There’s nothing the Enquirer specifies about the position in SH3, but it would probably be a fairly interesting one. Maybe it’s the piece’s villain so that Downey Jr. and Depp can have fun on the screen facing off. It’s mind-blowing that the couple have never been together in a movie to date, but might this be where it actually occurs? Time is going to say.

Sherlock Holmes 3 was last scheduled for release on December 22nd, 2021, and to be directed by Dexter Fletcher, but that’s unlikely to happen anymore. With some luck, though, we’re going to see it in 2022.
